Tinashe - 'Popstar'

Tinashe - Joyride

Tinashe's 3rd album and 7th overall project. The album that was a turning point for Tinashe's career. Under immense pressure from her label, the era was plagued with constant pushbacks, mismanagement from her label, and poor support for her music among others. First off is the single "Player" with a Collab with CB (it was really the label, it wasn't me!) next was summer ready for "SuperLove" (which has aged gracefully IMO) and the infamous "Flames" where Tinashe said "I cried for two days when they told me I had to put that song out as a single."

She was committed to get the album out and after a slew of singles, Joyride was released! The album symbolizes Tinashe's tenacity and conviction for her music. And after a failed romance with Ben Simmons and scraping the album Nashe with the tracks "Like I Used To" and "Throw A Fit" Tinashe decided it was time to move on from RCA.

  • my god what a ******* HORRIBLE album slop noise made for the most insufferable genre of gays, genuinely so surprised to see the acclaim, you'd expect this to be some sort of genre pushing masterpiece

  • She's just so inauthentic and always throwing **** at the wall to see if it sticks, I can't get into it. Cheap throwaway pop music. 3/10.

What are the most memorable moments from the Joyride era for you guys? Mine would be when Tinashe was promoting Flame using a fire truck and her performing with half naked firemen in the middle of winter on the side of the street for less than 30 people. Tinashe was going THROUGH IT!! jonny5

All of BB/A, the bulk of SFY, some from 333

which songs on songs for you? like Save Room For Us?

I have been listening to her entire discography the past few weeks in the lead up to POPSTAR and when I say this woman has been such a big part of my life since i first heard Aquarius 14 years ago, her music has been with me since I was a teenager and I have so many memories and experiences tied to her albums and eras jonny

From the gaggery of how good Aquarius was, to the smashery of 2on, the fan meltdowns over Pretend being a single, the AHOD single release and Best Friends Sophia Grace version jonny2 and the Iggy EGGS! remix, the trenches we were in during the Joyride era, to getting her magnum opus Nightride, to the final release of Joyride being so mid (for her standards), the musical revival with SFY and 333 and the scrapping of Nashe, then the POP INJUSTICE of Needs not being a smash hit, to finally getting another hit with Nasty, the EP shenanigans and scrapping of part 3, all leading to POPSTAR jonny5

I think my general ranking would be:

Nightride > Aquarius > Songs For You > 333 > Amethyst > (POPSTAR thing) > Quantum Baby > Reverie > BB Angel > Black Water > In Case We Die > Nashe > Joyride

Her discography is just IMMACULATE, not to mention the amount of brilliant unreleased songs she has. She really is one of the best pop stars ever.

She has everything:

  • Vocals

  • Dancing

  • Producing

  • Taste

  • Visuals (most of the time)

It is truly one of the biggest Pop injustices that she wasnt the biggest pop star on the planet post Aquarius cries

I know at the end of the day it doesn't matter that much if the songs are good, but ugh the amount of short songs just disappoints me every time cries

If we do end up getting a remix album I hope we get some longer mixes

I think Tinashe would've hated this idea but I think RCA should've pushed another album between Nightride and Joyride with full pop songs like Player, Flame, Prisoner, promoting those songs and trying to make one of them a hit, and then let her have freedom for the actual Joyride

The issue back then wasn't what the album was supposed to sound like primarily. It was the fact that Tinashe was failing to get hit songs for the album to anchor on. Joyride was basically being held hostage until Tinashe got a hit but RCA wouldn't properly promote her. It was really a catch 22.

Joyride was Tinashe under extreme compromise. Flame was released as a single cause it got her a sponsorship with Pepsi and a lot of promo slots.

Also at the time, another issue was Tinashe being put in a box cause she was too pop for R&B and vice versa. They just didn't know what to do with her. A fully pop album would risk alienating the fanbase she already had with her previous 6 releases.

suburban

Not only 4 songs being over 3 minutes deadbanana2

The pinkpantherefication skull

Nobody wants to dance anymore , popstar, and brainrot being less than 2:30 minutes should be an international crime.

Anyways there is possibility for remixes and even a remix album later. Excited nevertheless.

Nobody wants to dance anymore is a Pop country/americana song skull

The track lengths don't surprise me. She's been doing shorter songs since BB/ANG3L but it always sucks to see. I need her 4-5+ min songs back 😭 but regardless I'm so happy we're getting a proper album so the song lengths are whatever at this point

i really liked all the singles so i'm excited for the album..

Fires & Flames really is a god-tier ballad. And the title track Joyride and Stuck With Me still go off

IMO shorter song lengths are definitely being imposed by labels on artists so they can get as many single-LP vinyl variants pressed as they know that's where a fanbase will likely splurge for an album release, and of course also for the streaming algos or whatever. It sucks but I feel like it's a compromise many artists have to go through right now with streaming dominance and vinyl being a semi-lucrative sales tactic again
