Is ChatGPT a fad?

Featured Replies

ChatGPT was talked about so much when it launched in the 2020s, but I barely hear people talk about it anymore. Was ChatGPT a fad?

No. But the disparity between people who know how to use it effectively and people who don't is becoming greater and greater. And at some point, people who aren't keeping up with how to maximize its use are going to be professionally left behind.

girl... i'm in grad school rn, and taking a cursory walk through the library, you see that literally everyone has it open monkey

Chat GPT doesn't know everything. It told me to call an ambulance when I had chest pain from a pill when I didn't need one, and it can't rank albums for sh*t. I spent a couple months talking to it almost every day but I'm kinda over it.

It's gradually becoming a staple, rather than trend . Lots of people use it but don't see the need to talk about it. It's like WhatsApp outside of US. Literally almost everyone who has a phone uses it but you don't see people often talking about it. It's become a normal stuff

Exactly. The fake superiority of those who look down on those who uses it lol

Not really those different to those boomers who refused to use the internet and emails.

I'm not sure. I still like to hope AI will fizzle out but it's looking less and less likely. doc

Hopefully, but I doubt it. TBH it would already be a success if everyone who uses it was actually aware that it has nothing to do with intelligence in any way, but that it is just an LLM. Frankly, we never should've let those stupid companies get away with using the term "artificial intelligence" in the first place.

lowkey yeah... i felt like i always used to see people say **** like "use AI to 10x your productivity" "use chatgpt or fall behind" and now it's crickets from them seeing as it doesn't do allat chick1

yes in the sense that there are models out there that are already better than it. it's a fad in the sense that too many people use it as a end all be all, instead of a tool. they using it to replace their thinking instead of enhancing.

Well let's hope so because it's making people dumber by the second. They're using it as a friend, therapist, boyfriend/girlfriend, writing papers...it's just too much. Like where's the creativity ?

In my opinion it's here to stay because it doesn't exist in isolation, it is a product under a much larger company.

Chat GPT is one product (of many) under parent company Open AI.

They are struggling to make money rn from purely user subscriptions. And they announced recently that Chat GPT will start being open to advertisers, as they will start to advertise products within prompt result queries, and as GPT's new revenue source, so this will give it new life.

Especially since a lot of internet users are not doing searching on traditional search engines anymore but via these AI tools like GPT, Grok, Gemini, and Claude, etc.

So in my opinion , all of this plus their many multi billion dollar deals with other corporate giants like Microsoft signals to me that Chat GPT is here to stay for the near future.

…After college, every person decides if they want to continue up-skilling in their life. Grad school, PhD, all of that is optional.

You don't have to do it.

But those who do may have an advantage in a field over those who don't, but that's not "unfair", it's the result of working on your skills even after school ends.

Same with Chat GPT. You don't have to learn how to use it. But those who do and use it regularly will very likely benefit career wise over those who don't, sadly life can be very competitive and ruthless in that sense…

For me, it's changed my life. I don't trust or believe blindly everything it tells me, but it has become a guru assistant / guidance that truly helps me clarify important things I wouldn't know otherwise as an entrepreneur (for example), I don't know what I don't know, but it really helps me to feel less blind as I navigate the complexities of the world of e-commerce, or how to do business, or how to set up something on a platform I haven't used before, or how to optimize a social media post properly, etc etc.

I just recommend never stopping learning these tools in general 🫶

I'm sure the Swiftie fanbase has already used it and other AI bots to give their fave unlimited streams out of desperation

ChatGPT being a "fad" feels like the same take people had about the internet in 1998 or smartphones in 2007.

A fad is something culturally loud but structurally disposable. This is already embedded in workflows across tech, media, education, marketing, law, healthcare, etc. Once a tool becomes infrastructural, it stops being a trend and starts being utility. Utility doesn't trend, it stabilizes.

What people are really reacting to is saturation. When something is everywhere at once, backlash reads like collapse. But backlash is usually just the normalization phase kicking in. The hype cools, the branding evolves, weaker companies fall off, and what's actually useful stays.

Will the current form look the same in five years? Probably not. Will generative AI as a capability disappear? Extremely unlikely. There's too much capital, integration, and productivity upside tied to it now.

Beanie Babies were a fad. Broadband wasn't. This feels a lot more like the latter.

No it's still used just less hyped. A lot of these tools aren't meant to replace all creativity of the person.

Given OpenAI made less than $10 billion in revenue last year with an operational cost of $150 billion, I’d say it’s not going to be around for the long haul.

Hopefully, and there are already other sites like it that are starting to do better and replace it.
