Lady Gaga

This is part 2 of the Lady Gaga discussion.

I literally get emotional thinking about this. But I've always admired Gaga's inclusivity of people with disabilities in her choreography. She's been doing this since she debuted! When I was in high school I didn't understand why she did the choreos that she did but then as I got older it made more sense. And it was very obvious with Abracadabra with the sitting down choreo and the cane choreo heart

I thought this was common knowledge yall rip why are you all acting so new. Why would the song about broken mirrors not be on Mayhem originally rip

I'm not sure if Happy Mistake was ever meant for Mayhem only because it has BloodPop and Benjamin Rice credits which didn't work on any of the rest of Mayhem. I think Happy Mistake was a song from her sessions in 2020-2022 post-Chromatica pre-Mayhem when she wasn't really sure what she was going to do for LG7 yet. If it had Andrew Watt or Cirkut credits, then it would make sense.

I think they needed a song to take Die With A Smile's spot on Harlequin so she pulled that song from her archive rather than sacrificing a Mayhem song for Harlequin. Just my thoughts on it. It's so interesting that we have this twist on DWAS/JFAD/Mayhem now.

I wanna make a confession, and I swear I'm not lying.

I haven't watched JFAD. rip

Once the bad reviews came out I decided it would be too much for me. It caused me so much anxiety, like actual anxiety.

Should I give it a try?

It's not a bad movie at all tbh. People just hate it because nothing really happens in the movie and the ending is extremely controversial. Gaga's acting is the most natural out of all of her acting projects so that means she is definitely getting better.

Also, you can tell Happy Mistake comes from the same sessions as Perfect Celebrity, Garden of Eden, Can't Stop the High, Blade of Grass, i.e. later in the writing sessions when she was doing that whole electro grunge thing. The only thing that stands out is Bloodpop's involvement, but idk, it still makes sense if Happy Mistake was originally the closer of Mayhem.

Girl it's from Chromatica writing session.

The fact that BloodPop thought heavily H&M-ified 1000 Doves and Fun Tonight remixes were better fit for release is another point against the album

Oh makes perfect sense actually.

Something to also consider is the turnaround time needed for vinyl production. Harlequin had vinyls ready on release day, so I'm guessing the decision to not include DWAS was made much earlier than we're thinking. But from what I understand, the minimum turnaround time for vinyls is around 8 weeks, and DWAS wasn't even out 8 weeks before Harlequin, so...I have no idea. deadbanana

I did always find it weird that even though DWAS was very obviously Joker adjacent in theme and visuals, no one ever outright said it was connected to it upon release, which you would think would be the case before anyone knew how much it would bomb. This makes me wonder if the decision to cut DWAS's ties with JFAD was made after the music video was shot, but before it was released. This timeline could work in terms of the vinyl turnaround issue. Perhaps she saw how the final product of JFAD was turning out and decided then to pull the plug on anything extra, but it was too late for DWAS because the video was already recorded (and Harlequin she was obviously too passionate about to just let me unreleased).

So much lore to this, I wish we could know the full story!

That's a good point. Now that you mention it, the decision to cut DWAS from anything JFAD-related probably went down months earlier. Here's my revised timeline:

  • Early 2024: Bruno approaches Gaga sometime before she saw a cut of the movie to make a song for the soundtrack. He invites her to the studio on that (now legendary) night, and the rest is history.

  • The JFAD OST is really the only project for the song at this point since Harlequin doesn't exist yet. Because of this, the song is released through Interscope and there's probably some contract stipulation that Bruno can't put it on an album of his own.

  • Early June 2024: DWAS music video is filmed. Now admittedly, my only evidence for this is Gaga posting this TikTok. Filming a MV two months before release seems pretty standard for the industry + the DWAS MV is the only 2024 Gaga look I can think of where she has half-winged eyeliner like she does here.

  • Mid - late June 2024 (?): This is where I now think she decided to take DWAS off the soundtrack. Maybe she saw the movie for the first time and realized it was a stinker? Idk, but this is when I think she decided to remove DWAS from JFAD and record Harlequin (probably so that well-sung versions of the JFAD songs exist in Gaga's discography).

  • Late June - early July 2024: Harlequin was recorded (the album notes state that it was recorded over 3 "unbearably hot" summer weeks in Vegas. Gaga was in Vegas for J&P during this time, so it was probably recorded around then). Either due to Gaga's recording contract or creative reasons, her and Michael decide to self-fund it.

  • August 2024: Harlequin vinyls go into production at the beginning of the month. DWAS is released in the middle of the month and smashes.

Again, this is all speculation. But given the new information we learned from the Variety article, this is the best I can do. Honestly, the situation with DWAS worked out as well as it could've: the song is absolutely gargantuan, its units count towards Mayhem (which would still be a platinum #1 album without it), the Joker-esque imagery of the MV is super iconic and referenced (without being tied to JFAD itself), and Gaga walked away from JFAD relatively unscathed.
