Love Florence, but this isn't demonic enough for me. If the rest of the album is like this I might just stick with Britney.

the cover convinced me, and the snippet too!

I must say, out of all the songs that were released, the only one I thought was interesting was Sympathy Magic. But listening to the full album now, wow she did again :jonny4: this is great, people needs to stop aiming at something better than HBHBHB and just enjoy the music separately

Beginning my first listen now

I only listened to the singles like 2-3 times each because I don't believe Florence to be a singles artist and already they sound better than I remember. :johnald:

Yes, the Patti influence was all over the album I felt while listening, but she has attempted it before and always felt like a bit of an awkward match, but here she really marries her own sensibilities perfect with it. It's punk poetry trough a very 18th century Romantic lens and I think she has produced something quite special.

Contrary to some opinions, this album feels like the evolution I was waiting for from her. It's lush, warm, detailed; a move away from anthemic choruses to a more enveloping sound. She really took me on a journey, which makes And Love as a closer hit all the more strongly. She embraces the transcendense of mysticism but in true medieval fashion: it's dirty work, blood and mud, embracing the monster within. The female mystic is a perfect comparison for her and her career: they were feared by the male clergy because of their personal relationship to godliness, they were too much and Florence has aways been found too much; by critics and evidently by lovers too.

I think her voice has never sounded better, such clarity like ringing church bells on the foggy landscape. Musically I think this album also finds the perfect middle ground between the pagan thundering drums and the more freeform rock stylings. It also perfect for the season, not because of (silly) Halloween, but because it is the season of death and liminality and this album feels like a testimony to her desire and willingness to break her body for a glimpse of transcendence only to find that love can be as dependable as the rising sun.

Idk, it's a hit in this household, ladies!

:clap3:

Very well said!

This is why I won't rank it against her others after one listen. It was kind of overwhelming, and I think she's finally living up to the 'alternative' rock label that she's been saddled with despite making quite uplifting anthemic pop songs many times over. The meandering melodies and patchy rhythms will burrow into my brain eventually but what's most striking about Everybody Scream is how she's unmasking her emotions rather than performing them like she was on Dance Fever, where it felt like she dragged an album out of her boredom because she was stuck rotting at home so much. This one clearly just spilled out of her all messy and deconstructed because of the tragedy she went through.

Very Patti, very Polly, a little bit Boys for Pele if you squint.

Could you elaborate? Because I don't nn. Biophilia has such sparse soundscapes, though perhaps there's a push and pull to the songs that is a bitsy similar. Mutual Core is maybe structurally a bit like some songs here: bombastic melody contrasted with more somber verses.

At this point I've accepted the fact I usually don't enjoy Florence's albums as a whole. I like a few songs but they're not albums I listen back to back. The only exception to that is Dance Fever, I really like that one.

Everybody Scream is a gorgeous opening. And Sympathy Magic, Kraken and Music By Men grabbed my attention upon first listen. But yeah Florence albums are just not for me, it sounds very same-y throught? But it's not a bad by any means.

Okay but... And Love is one of the best songs I've ever heard oh wow those vocals and that harp... I'm scalped. Speechless.

Just finished my first listen and my top 3 were Witch Dance, Sympathy Magic, and You Can Have It All, but trust I will be streaming it over and over

On first listen I can't really get into it, the vocals are otherworldly as usual and I appreciate the storytelling focus, but in terms of melodies it is very meandering, with not much to get you hooked imo. Once the novelty of the lyrics wears off I don't think there's much I'd go back to.

I know Florence has always been very lyric-driven, but in the past she always found a middle ground, and the stories and melodies worked in synergy. Or maybe I'm just not in the right mood rn :michael:

On my first spin my standouts are Everybody Scream, Sympathy Magic, Buckle, and Kraken
