the drums in Babylon elevated the song for me. if its not there, its gonna sound like another champagne problem esque song. the drums gives it the passage of time effect for the story telling and make it like a sad bop which is kinda rare in her discography tbh.

I feel this is the tracklist that shows the album in its best light. No 10/10s but a perfectly decent - if directionless - pop album exists in there somewhere. I think if anything that the extended tracklist of 16 songs really clarifies that Showgirl is Lover 2.0 in terms of quality and dead wood.

I was so excited to move on from this era.... I can't believe she released the deluxe edition of Showgirl. When she announced the title, and the collaborators, I thought "Wow! We are getting bops! We are getting Circus-Britney-Showgirl vibes/songs!" But I was so disappointed. The first red flag was the release party thing in the cinema. I paid $20 for the ticket and it was a bunch of lyric videos, and then the album was very underwhelming (The Fate of Ophelia is amazing though).

Since she didn't promote anything for months I thought this nightmare was over, but these 4 new tracks just confirmed to me that this album is her weakest effort. I will always root for her but this new music ain't it. Wow what a disappointment.

It can't be worst than TLOAS. I have hopes that after all the negative press, she will release a good album (Plus, it's her 13th so I know it has to be good)

Me being just as ancient, wanting her to tear the charts up, kinda wanting her to go back to country/alternative pop, celebrating the first week of autumn aka Swiffer Season, and loving the new music even if it flops, life is good

i could understand the critiques more if her debut album had been folklore, but it wasn't. red is a perfect example of how varied her songwriting has always been. we have "22" and "we are never ever getting back together" on the same album as "all too well" and "sad beautiful tragic." and i can almost guarantee that if a song like "22" had been on the life of a showgirl then it would be getting ripped apart on social media just for the sake of it, even though it's a fan favorite.

i don't care if people don't like her or her music, but it's so stupid that we get called a cult or told that we're forcing ourselves to like her music lmao. there are plenty of modern artists i can't stand and i genuinely don't understand how people enjoy their music, but i don't need to understand. we all have different opinions. i'd never go out of my way to tell their fans that they're pretending to like their music. it's weird af.

i'm definitely going to be more cautious about who i respond to in the future because i'm sure most of the haters on this site are either trolls or just looking for an argument. i really don't have the energy for that when i just want to enjoy her music and talk to people who also enjoy it.

I agree with the lyrics still being strong. There are one-liners here that I find stronger than anything on Reputation (gasp!)

A lot of her previous work would've also been absolutely crucified if released today.

On the other hand, it's also fair to hope for better from her now. She has 20 years of songwriting experience, access to any producer in the world and has set the bar very high with the ~100 stone cold classics she has to her name. I can't help but think and hope that revisiting Showgirl now is a conscious choice to set up her next project…
