SNSD's first Japanese album selling 1M was beyond huge back then, and it was "real". What's going on now makes AKB48's golden-era sales look normal, when they were boosted by handshake events (I love AKB) and were basically one of the few exceptions in J-Pop at that time.

The thing that new gen fans fail to understand about gen 2 icons like GD, IU, SNSD, 2NE1, and even some of their predecessors like Boa, TVXQ, Seo Taiji is that everything that came after them wasn't just copying them, but also riding the international demand for kpop that they created.

 

It's a lot harder to get people to like that first kpop song or album than it is to follow that up. If somebody wasn't already checking for kpop, and kpop wasn't known in their country at the time, these artists had to be doing something really special to garner even a modest fanbase. It's why they can take huge breaks and come back to career best sales and streams. Their successors grew the industry too but it's always harder to get that first breakthrough. 

 

SM had to spend MILLIONS(USD) in the 90s to make BoA more talented than her competition in Japan and to make her unlockable as a Korean. Once that market was cracked and people realized the output of the Korean industry might actually be good,future successes like TVXQ didnt even need to downplay their Korean origins and barely even knew the Japanese language, and after them learning Japanese has become entirely optional for kpop idols that want to promote or tour there.

 

 

Bigbang was charting on iTunes and selling out arenas in the west back when people looked at you like you were smoking crack when you told them you were listening to Korean music. Their last tour in the us in 2015 had dates that outgrossed Taylor Swift in the same venues, which completely upends the narratives about GD.

 

The fact of the matter is that he doesn't promote or do media play here and does not have any kind of agency or label so he never got the push that his successors had. There was still a line down the street at every Nike store all around the world including the US when he dropped his first collab.

 

IU has a fraction of the international appeal of GD and instantly sold out a US arena tour last year. These icons are truly treasured and will always be famous.

now let GD enjoy his sucess and go listen to lisa's non existent vocals (or whoever hired to do that for her)  in her attempts to fish another celebrity in the hopes she scores a hit (she wont)

Every single kpop act except for that brief newjeans peak that HYBE fumbled on purpose rides entirely on their dedicated fanbase and are nonfactors to the gp. GD won't chart outside of Asia and neither would anybody without streaming farms. Doesn't change that his popularity in the countries where kpop artists have a shot at actually dominating charts is unsurpassed.
