Now that the year is Almost over there are no other worthwhile albums to be released before Xmas starts. So what we heard this year, is it. Is BRAT the album of the year?  Taking into account impact, commercial success, capturing the zeitgeist, etc.

Well yes. It's between BRAT and HMHAS for me. Eternal Sunshine is up there too, but it kinda went "unnoticed" in comparison although it's a bulletproof pop album.

It's so funny how a specific few bases start reeling the second ANYBODY has a runaway success. 

 

 

OT: It's not even Charli's best album but I really think she deserved this moment.

Let's also talk quality, because when you add that dimension, yes! 
 

There are so many albums released this year that I love, like truly adore. TTPD winding its way through my brain in all its forms; Cowboy Carter delivering a stunning peak for an already immaculate discography; HMHAS gifting us with all-time great tracks like Chihiro as part of its rich soundscape; Girl With No Face delivering on all the promise of Allie's talents and then some, nearly completely self-made; Eternal Sunshine capturing magic in its way of moving on from a chapter of life; Quantum Baby shocking us who love her work with not just another Tinashe stomp, but a return to the spacious soundscapes of her immaculate mixtapes. Like, I cannot overstate how incredible this year has been for those of us who love the women who make all this music. I am deeply grateful for all of it.

 

Brat, however, especially the combined edition with the remix album, stands out from the pack. It's a serious contender for my favorite album of all time now, and it does things with its sounds that I think only Charli, AG Cook, and their collaborators could have done. I honestly hope we haven't even begun to see its impact, because a noisy introspective hyperpop album seeing this much commercial success and media notice is incredible. I really hope in the coming years we see it impact more. I hope it becomes this musical generation's version of Blackout in terms of its impact on actual sounds and its reputation among pop fans, but with the respect that Blackout actually deserved and didn't truly receive even retrospectively.

 

Regardless, it contains some of the best work by, in my opinion, the most visionary artist in pop music today, a woman at the cutting edge of pop who has been putting out nonstop brilliance for a decade. The fact that she managed to make something even more compelling than either her self-titled record or How I'm Feeling Now with the standard edition was shocking to me already, but with the addition of remixes like the Everything Is Romantic remix, and by uplifting some of the less obviously excellent tracks like I Might Say Something Stupid and I Think About It All The Time, I think Charli took Brat to a level all its own. Charli has made an album that I would be entirely unashamed to put in conversation with all-time greatest albums that I literally revere like Homogenic and Vespertine. This year has been about many things and many albums, but for me, it all orbits around Brat.

I don't see Cowboy Carter getting a win, but knowing them they'll string her along with another nom. She deserves a win, just not with this album.

I can only hope they're tired of nominating (and awarding) mediocrity, so fingers-crossed there's no Toilet Plunger Department nom.

No it's her worst album. The remix package salvages it slightly but doesn't fully save the project from sounding like a bunch of ringtones (in sound AND duration)

 

Girl With No Face is probably the pop frontrunner but it's been an underwhelming year (among albums I've bothered to listen to, anyway)

Why are you talking about the Grammys? They don't own the trademark for "AOTY"

Culturally: Yes

 

AOTY Grammy-wise: I think it would be a shock to see it win there. It isn't typically what voters would opt for

If Grammy is being serious, then yes

 

But I wouldn't mind Billie or Chappell winning
