Because pop fans of 2024 act more as gatekeepers than consumers. Stans complain about a "lack of growth", "no artistic merit" etc whilst the majority of the material that they are currently supporting on Billboard is nothing of the sort either. Some artists are demanded to release groundbreaking songs, while others are adored and supported despite never doing anything extraordinary.

I agree with this, but if you release a good song, they will stream it anyways and switch as Nicki famously said. Plus, if you can breach the GP, you don't even need stan twitter. I honestly think that's the key to Taylor's success, she built a loyal GP fanbase including tons of women. Pandering to the fickle gays can make you a cult classic like Charli XCX, but it's very fleeting. Katy always toed the line of camp but still appealed to the GP. Now, she is kinda appealing to neither.

It is actually performing better than deserved.

Now I hate Katy Perry as much as the next woman but it's actually being passed around, panned and pisssed on at all of the hottest publications like a chem twink at a bathhouse.

This is not truth, unfortunately. Taylor Swift objectively has much more growth than Katy and has some of the most successful music evolution in modern pop music history. There are reasons why she is at the top of the world 18 years in her career. The response from GP won't lie considering they're generally more strict with female pop artists, and those people who fail to do that won't even last for 3 or 4 eras (the so-called 4th album curse), and that's why artists like Dua and Katy seem to lose GP's interest immediately after a smash era.
