Alanis, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Fiona Apple, Aaliyah, Paula Cole, Bjork, Brandy, Shania etc... were all ushering in new sounds and making cultural impact that would have left "The Divas" in the dust had they not changed their sound. Celine had become the pop-ballad Queen during the late 90s. It was smart for Mariah and Whitney to incorporate more Rap and R&B-Soul sounds to their albums because they would have not been able to keep up with Celine. R&B was also changing, meaning that Janet had to male something completely different than the Janet album. The younger pop girlies were in their creative and alternative bag, leaving Madonna with no choice but to get in her creative/artistic bag as well.
