Featured Replies

What/when do you think was Mariah's vocal peak? Feel free to post some examples of your favorite performances/recordings here

Personally, I really like how she sounded towards the end of 2001

the way she whistles "never too far" at the end of this is just divine

and this classic video was filmed back then too. she caught the Holy Spirit here :jonnycat:

Up until Butterfly. Her voice was amazing back then. One of the best actually.

I was think Daydream era too. But it's not like it just plummeted afterward. It was still OTHERWORLDLY up until maybe……mid 2010s

The correct answer.

I don't follow her live performances that closely but my favorite recorded performances are from her first couple of albums. Her voice was so clear and so pure.

Agreed, pre-1997 is peak Mariah vocals. By the time we got to I Still Believe and Heartbreaker, there was a clear and noticeable decline.

'92-'95 was the technical peak of her instrument, but '00-'03 was an amazing resurgence of abilities thought to be lost years prior.

Butterfly actually showcased an increase in vocal agility and versatiliy of timbre despite less ease in upper belts.

Late 1999 was the true decline.

The biggest peak was Daydream era or Music Box era, but overall it was 1990-1998; 2002-2004.

It's actually 1993 with the Music Box era, but she's always been fantastic. Even her recent clip of wishing Da Brat happy birthday with a song is vocally better than most pop singers. Her biggest competitor is herself setting the bar too high in the 90s.

Music Box era.

"Without You" vocally is so impressive

True... nobody of today's generation can sing a classic Mariah song. A song like Butterfly cannot be sung by anyone else.

This. She obviously technically peaked in the 90s but in the early 00s her voice had a matured flavor and depth.

Charmy Tour was amazing

Her first christmas album

And also right before her breakdown somewhere in 2001
