Maroon 5: What went wrong?

Featured Replies

There was a time, during their first and second album they were seen as a respectable band. People actually saw their music as good quality. Especially from "Songs About Jane". However, with their third album they switched to radio fodder. Music you hear at company parties, malls, and family friendly establishments. While they continued to sell, make hits, and tour successfully. While they are still relevant to a degree, they have lost all respect. They essentially seem like a vessel for Adam Levine's massive ego. Maroon 5 have become so hated, that there's countless articles and internet posts about how much they suck calling them sellouts.

Don't hate Maroon 5 because they're 'Overexposed'

Every generation has its artists that breed resentment simply because they’re a bit too successful. Hall & Oates. Madonna. Lionel Richie. Over time, people get tired of hearing these artists because t

It all went downhill after that Xtina collab. Both careers should have died at that point.

I don't think they were ever seen as a "respectable band", not even during their debut. Rock band fans pretty much hate anything pop, especially back in the 00s. I'd say nothing went wrong with them. They had the career they wanted to have and got great success with it.

As you said the music became ass. They became too generic and radio fodder-y. But they were also getting big hits consistently for nearly 2 decades so all in all they did last more than I personally though they would.

Lost all respect from whom?

Get a grip.

They just performed a sold-out show to 70k people in London. I think they'll be fine.

Okay hot take, their first three albums slap. Idc.

They suffered from the "hey fellow kids" syndrome of Coldplay and Madonna from album 4 onwards and it's never been the same since.

Some of their work is still a guilty pleasure, but yeah, it's disappointing to see what they became :(

They worked with christian aguilera who transmitted them her curse I fear chick3

Yes. That's a better way to explain it. The syndrome hit Coldplay a little later so they have a few more albums that are considered classics.

I hated them when they first came out (was more into rnb at the time) became a fan of them after moves like jagger then went back and listened to their first three albums which I loved.

loved MLJ so much that I pre order that overexposed album. When it came out and I heard it hated it so much that I asked iTunes for a refund they granted it and they deleted that album off my phone and gave me my money back

the album before moves like jagger came out kind of flopped/underperformed so they panicked and chased charts not arts

I love their first three albums and Overexposed was more than fine. After that the music became horrible. V still has a few nice tracks and one major highlight (It Was Always You), but after that none of their albums have more than one redeemable track.

They lasted longer than anyone expected, imo. After their first album, they released bland, radio-friendly songs just to keep their relevance alive.

Their collab with Rihanna just confirmed that. (Even though, If I Never See Your Face Again is totally underrated and was overshadowed by Umbrella.)

I feel like Maroon 5 are simply not that invested in being a band. People compare them to Coldplay but they share songwriting credits, record together in the studio, avoid side-projects, etc.

I wouldn't say flopped. Makes Me Wonder was their first #1 hit and released after a hiatus. I'd rather say that they realized they needed to release songs that radios would love.

Makes Me Wonder wasn't before MLJ. Hands All Over was and yeah it kinda flopped.

They sold out to keep their relevancy and career alive, it worked but they sacrificed whatever artistic integrity they had in the process

Huh? Makes Me Wonder was the lead single of their 2007 album. Moves Like Jagger was released in 2010.

Yes and they released another album after it in 2010 which underperformed and MLJ was released in 2011.

The halftime show felt like it stained their legacy, they had a couple more hits after it but faded away after that

I think their entire discography is fine some Albums better than others ppl are just over the top extra when it comes to ha!

The same thing that happened to P!nk and currently happening to Ed Sheeran. Lost all edge and cool factor to make radio or Spotify music back when that was a viable model but now that both radio and Spotify won't touch anything that isn't already viral, they don't have the fanbase necessary to prop them up or the artistic backbone to put out something that isn't fodder.

Maroon 5 were never that big. They used Xtina's name for a hit but they haven't been able to replicate that same success solo.
