    I don't think they were ever seen as a "respectable band", not even during their debut. Rock band fans pretty much hate anything pop, especially back in the 00s. I'd say nothing went wrong with them.

by default and logic, they lost its passion when their manager passed and the time was due to lay back and stop chasing hits.

as horrible the last two albums were, imo they've achieved so much success any band would imagine in their dream and selling more tour dates than imagine dragon who also got full bunch of hits. they could tour earn money for the rest of their lives as well as katy because their hits always carry them for decades to come.
