I've seen some viral tweets in the past few days where the "yall hate fun" reaction to criticism received a lot of backlash and people were saying it was used to justify mediocre or just plain bad music. Do you agree with this? Do you think it's often justified or a cheap stan defense?

It depends on whether I like the music or not. If I find it fun then yeah y'all hate fun, but if I find it to be trash then "y'all hate fun" is a stupid defence.

Yes, mainstream pop culture has gotten sloppy, but I think the general negative energy of the internet has honestly sucked the fun out of everything.

I'll be enjoying a new pop release only to go to online spaces and see nothing but complaining. Olivia's song wasnt out for 3 days before being declared a flop. What artist wouldnt be demoralized by that?

It's used to justify lazy, low effort trash about 95% of the time. Good music doesn't have to be complicated, but it does have to have some personality.

i think its valid because not ALL music is made to be a statement. sometimes it's for fun and that doesn't make it any less of a song.

Both. It's the evolution of people who would, rightly, call out certain things as camp that people then co-opted to do things like call Katy Perry's Smile camp No, that's just bad.

It's really both but I've seen it mostly used to deflect criticism. People don't know how to criticize art properly anymore. Every new song is either a masterpiece or a huge turd. Barely anyome can articulate why they like/dislike something because so many grown adults (many of whom are still in spaces like stan twitter ) are illiterate now.

It was more valid back then when sexist rockist dudes were dominating the music discourse.

If you have to use "y'all hate fun" to justify using a song then it is probably bad in the first place. If a beat is actually hot and catchy nobody will actually put too much thought into the lyrics.

I think it's valid much of the time. Music snobs (many in this very thread) will act like generic music that a toddler could recognize as generic is utter low culture garbage, but then if some highfalutin artisté borrows from "low culture" in the right way, they act like it's the highest art form possible. And the truth is most of the time they're completely beholden to the opinions of other people in the music snob world and are largely incapable of thinking for themselves

I just reject "critics" in all forms tbh, and many of the greatest modern art movements have grown from rejecting critics
