I like the album, but I don't love it. It grew on me a lot after a few listens. At first, I thought "Fairytale" had weak lyrics and felt like there wasn't much A&R or label investment behind it. Then I found out it was Tyla's take on a South African classic. After listening to the original (which I love), I really appreciate her version. My only criticism is that I wish she had used more power in her vocals. I also think "Is It Love" is a terrible opener, it feels like an EP track and killed the vibes on my first listen.

I think the discussion around her career is fair. Epic doesn't seem to be fully pushing singles like "Push 2 Start," "Chanel," or "She Did It Again," but I also think Tyla takes a pretty laid back approach to promotion which isn't something you can say about Rih from 2005-2014. But to be fair it's much harder to break songs as there is no monoculture and it hard to get people's attention etc.

My theory is that she may have pissed off some people at her label when she canceled her debut tour because of her back injury. Touring builds loyal fans and gives labels confidence to invest more. FLO's (who obvs aren't as successful) theatre tours helped establish their fanbase, and I think Tyla would be in a much stronger position if she'd been able to do a proper headline tour instead of relying mostly on festivals and viral moments.

Her collaboration with P2J and Bibi Bourelly is cute but I hope this is the last time she works with them because they bring nothing new to the table...I know everyone wants her to go POP with mainstream producers but I think she could've had more Hits if talented South African producers were involved. KISS is a HIT though!

honestly all fair points in this thread, album is not the worst thing ever, but is every song a smash and clear in her identity? no. since this is just 2nd album i hope her third one leans more on "who she is". someone said in this thread "is her pouring her trauma going to make people know who she is". its not trauma people want, people want clear identity (brain aiming to simplify and instict for connection). i was trying to push tyla on people at work (most people dont know who is tyla) and their comments were they that dont get the album cover. i didnt even know the cover was the problem, but if you look at bad bunny debi tirar mas fotos or anitta's equilibrivm (I OR II doesnt matter) you immediately "feel something". Tyla's covers honestly I didnt know how to explain either. font is lost cause. Cosplaying Ari's dangerous woman era in "APOP" is just mixed messaging. Her live performances also dont match "aesthetic" or sound of the album. For neon she said in interview "I like neon since I was a child", ok? how is that related to message on the album? she needs some brand and pr manager. if you google who is it its 3 people but none of them are doing anything for her which means shes being ripped off.

There's some nice production across the album, but it's missing the intricacy, ambience and vulnerability of her debut for me. I think Kiss could grow to become one of my favorite Tyla songs though, a darker, slightly harder-hitting sound in the vein of that song and Mr. Media would have been a great way to push her sound forward imo.

Tyla is no exception to the extremely high expectations we put on main pop girlies (especially the new gens) but to me she served an excellent, fresh, high-quality album full of summer bops. I'm also glad she's not diverting from her sound, this feels like the younger, cooler sister of her debut album

She's already surpassed the pure sales from her debut, has had and will continue doing meet-and-greets all week, and there are multiple variants this time around, including three covers, one of which is the Bratz collab. Idk, I could honestly see it debuting around #15.

Even if it does, it's going to disappear in a few weeks. There is no hit here.

I mean this is okay? Not as terrible as some people making out to be but the middle section is a bit of a slog to get through.
