Gloria Steinem dead at 92
There aren't many highly visible feminists with marxist leanings. I think Angela Davis (who has her share of wrong standings) is probably the only popular one who's alive? But even then, I think it's usually more important not to fixate on an individual and elevate them to idol status. Especially where the socio-political is involved. There are many individuals in history who we can learn from, including Steinem with her flaws, without elevating them to be paragons of whatever ideals we have. They are human after all, and they're bound to disappoint you.

Gloria Steinem dead at 92
I think, Steinem, like a lot of people, simply focused on issues that were most pressing to her identity. She certainly believed in feminism, and her grandmother belonged to a suffrage movement. That her fight for equality didn't include class isn't unique. There are a lot of people whose beliefs of equality don't go beyond what would benefit them, I know a lot of communists and socialists who are misogynistic and homophobic. Of course this doesn't erase the work she did, but also her work with the CIA didn't involve overthrowing governments or the more sinister operations the organization has done in its history. However, her claiming she would still work with them despite all we know is disappointing. I don't think she was intentionally subversive with prioritizing feminism, she just happened to be a feminist who is not communist (like the majority of individuals across all equality groups) and who had short-lived ties with the CIA (very few can claim this). The CIA association is bound to taint her work, and for good reason, but multiple things can be true at once. EDIT: This is a response to the Steinem posturing bit, and think one can believe in one side of equality and disregard the other. I agree with pretty much everything you've stated otherwise. Especially that gender without addressing class struggle amounts to little.

- Rihanna
- Rihanna has 7 songs on Billboard Global 200; the most by any artist this week
- An AI-generated song is very close to reaching #1 on the UK chart
The way fear of music being AI is going to make people cling to older songs even more- Why don't we talk more seriously about how great t.A.T.u. actually were?
That's not what you had said though, you had tried to minimize their bigotry by making a blanket statement about "none of our faves being saints". No one denied that they had good music, but questioning why people don't look past their bigotry when most of the members of this site are queer is ridiculous. One member is virulent in her hate, she's part of the group, too bad that she's tainted their image because of her bigotry but people (especially queer individuals) are allowed to not **** with them.- Why don't we talk more seriously about how great t.A.T.u. actually were?
If you're fine with listening and praising homophobes, fine and dandy. Doesn't mean everyone has to. Neither of them support the queer community, and one of them is strongly and openly against gay people. If a gay person decides that a deal breaker for them, then that's a deal breaker for them, period. Trying to make it into "none of our faves are saints" as though they've said they wouldn't want a gay son or compared homosexuals to criminals is dumb, especially considering they still hold these views and didn't retract.- Why don't we talk more seriously about how great t.A.T.u. actually were?
Because they're bigoted homophobes?- Millennial MPGs and their most-streamed songs - rank from best to worst.
Toxic We Found Love Summertime Sadness Cruel Summer Someone Like You Halo 7 Rings Die With A Smile/Dark Horse (tie)- As time passes by, Renaissance is becoming Beyonce's best aged album. Agreed?
- Dua Lipa vs. Christina Aguilera: bigger popularity peak?
It's actually Xtina by a bit. Her first album is almost diamond, and Stripped was massive as well. Future Nostalgia was a huge era for Dua but she doesn't have another era that was also huge as Xtina did. But also Dua is younger and still relevant, so she most likely will surpass her if things go well for her, but it's Xtina at the moment.- What are you listening to right now?
- Has Dua Lipa reached her ceiling?
I mean one underwhelming era doesn't necessarily mean someone's done. She's still perceived as the cool beautiful pop star by the public, and if she gets another hit and an era with stronger branding, then she can get another successful era. Of course with show business there are no guarantees, but dismissing her completely because Radical Optimism was a decline is kind of premature.- "Flopping with class" first person that comes to mind?
- Has Dua Lipa reached her ceiling?
She's has a couple more hits in her I think. She's still very young.- Don't Stop The Music vs no tears left to cry
- At least 98 killed, hundreds missing after flash floods in Nepal and Tibet
- Who is the most universally beloved living female public figure?
Perhaps I could have worded it better, I was in no way condemning her but just stating a fact. No way conservatives would have loved her as much as they do if she was more vocal about opposition towards Trump's statements and policies that were in conflict with her values and actions. To be universally loved as Dolly was, one has to be neutral when it comes to political parties and presidents. A person like say, Fonda or Meryl, cannot be universally loved because they're not neutral. You summed it up perfectly. I think she was uniquely able to be beloved by the more liberal and left-leaning groups because of her own liberal beliefs and was beloved by conservatives because she never condemned them. I don't think there's currently a public figure that has all these elements as she did.- Why is Rihanna such a Pop Chameleon?
That wouldn't be true either, because that dancehall/Caribbean/pop mix with songs like Watch n Learn, Rude Boy, Watch n Learn, Work all sound very much like Rihanna. Other than that there's a particular time when labels literally tried to imitate her tone with new artists. That's impossible if someone has no sonic identity. It's very possible that one can dabble in various genres and still sound like herself which is in part why Rihanna is successful. She sounds like Rihanna whether on Where Have You Been, Man Down, Diamonds, Rockstar 101, or Pour It Up because there's nothing like that voice, you hear it and you immediately know who it is that's singing.- Who is the most universally beloved living female public figure?
I don't think there's another one like Dolly. Because as much as I love her, and I think that she's a wonderful person who did a lot for her community, she's universally loved because she was never vocal about her politics and never condemned conservatives outright. She's never really said anything against Trump which is why the conservatives love her as well as people from the left and center. The people mentioned in this thread: Cher, Meryl, Shakira, Rihanna, Julie Andrews, have all criticized Trump and his policies and the conservatives at some point so they're not adored by that side the way Dolly was.- Is Gwen Stefani one of the biggest frauds in pop music?
I think she genuinely changed, and wasn't conservative before. However, I think people have been so very lenient with her. If this was someone else who had gone conservative and had aligned themselves with the far right and their values they would be dragged and left behind (rightfully so). It's hypocritical to drag Nicki (rightfully) about her change in politics and social beliefs, but in the same breath defend Gwen.- Dolly Parton has died, aged 80
