Tyla - 'A*POP'

People started latching onto it after Tyla literally said she wanted to be "as big as Rihanna or even bigger," so of course every little thing was gonna get compared after that. Then the MET Gala happened and it just made it worse.

The comparisons aren't helping her career!!! Why are people talking about Tyla's career like it's following Rihanna's timeline? Stuff like "Rihanna's second album wasn't great either, but by the third she had Umbrella and that's what Tyla needs" is so weird 😭.

That's never gonna happen because Rihanna is Rihanna and Tyla is Tyla. Let her have her own path instead of trying to force the same career trajectory.

My thoughts exactly and that's something that ruins a lot of pop girls' trajectory looks at Ava Max

I literally talked about the Rihanna comparison and her obsession with trying to mimic her career route a few pages back.

NO ONE WANTS A NEW RIHANNA!! That's why Tyla is massively overlooked. It comes off weird when all you can do is see her strive to be someone we still have.

Rihanna has the biggest recurrent streams for any pop girl minus Taylor. So Tyla's music will never fill a casual Rihanna listener's void.

Rihanna has always been very self-aware when it comes to her image, that's a fact. But she also basically pioneered the massive writing-camp culture focused on manufacturing hits in the pop music. She's a combination of all those things because she's a rare phenomenon

And I vividly remember the radio spin updates for "Rude Boy" constantly climbing thanks to massive payola. The investment was huge because it always paid off clap3

So what you're saying is basically the resources poured onto Rihanna bore fruit while those for Tyla didn't?

And y'all need to stop calling CHANEL a hit, please rip Not even 500M WW by album release day

She's basically doing half her debut's numbers despite a year long promo run. Like I thought she would at least be able to outdo her self-titled at the very least

It was a hit, don't start nonsense

no because i'm genuinely shocked..

like i really thought the numbers would be higher. She performed at the World Cup twice, had a World Cup song, was at the Met Gala, performed on the Today Show, had multiple interviews, and held listening parties in London, Berlin, and NYC and announced the album back in April.

and the album received 4M streams first day.... WOW

oh and won another GRAMMY

By what standard? Honestly, it's not. It couldn't even generate 750k streams on album release day and y'all are calling it the "hit" of the album…..Viral on TikTok for a month at best…?

The two biggest black 'pop' girls right now are SZA & Olivia Dean and neither have any resemblance to Rihanna or Beyonce so yeah, leaning into comparisons with either of those two artists is kinda career suicide

She doesn't have the versatility or personality to pull of a rihanna type trajectory. She should focus on being a global popstar that is her niche.

Like all this PROMO. But let @GRETCHEN tell it Epic has Tyla down some alley selling her records from the trunk of her car

A lot strong songs on the album but I feel like something isn't connecting this era.

Gosh the numbers are TERRIBLE! rip

Better than Normani and Chlora

Saying this as someone who genuinely likes her but isn't a super fan or anything. I think that's what it is … the marketing and what was promised didn't match the final product and genuinely I don't think her personality sells it. I like that she tried to do diff styles of popular music but she didn't sell either super well. Kiss is a bop, I like hot tubs for an evening or pool vibe but some of these don't feel fully fleshed out. I wish she leaned fulllyyyy into pop but I get the whole not wanting to alienate her audience too. It's giving mixed bag

Now the question is: Will she announce a tour in hopes of saving the era or will she and her team take these #s as an indication that she's not ready for it? coffee2

My favs after listening a million times between car, gym, out at a party last night and on walks:

  1. THAT GIRL ... my clear #1

The rest is not in any particular order

  1. KISS

  2. FAIRYTALE

  3. DOUBLE BLIND

  4. FEEL SOMETHING

  5. RIGHT NOW

  6. SHE DID IT AGAIN

  7. IS IT

  8. CHANEL

  9. HOT TUBS

  10. MR. NON CHALANT

My only mehs are CRAZY OF ME and I DON'T CARE.... and I like IS IT LOVE as a song but I stand on it doesn't belong on THIS album.

Whew buddy, after hearing the album IS IT LOVE is infinitely better than FAIRYTALE and FEEL SOMETHING lmao. And I was the biggest IIL hater!

Can't wait to get a proper rip of SELFISH so I can really round this album out. BETTER THAN THIS sounds like it might get a spot on my tracklist too.

FAIRYTALE Is so classic cute pop song duet lol. Their verses blend together so well for me. It feels so vintage...and FEEL SOMETHING whew late night AFTER the party and you feeeeeling it. A FEELING lol....but yeah. Honestly the album just needs some major resequencing.
