Yes Tyla is inspired by Rihanna but no musically, they make totally different music, Tyla's music is a fusion of afrobeats , amapiano, rnb and dancehall, she's not making the same music as Rihanna. Just like Zara Larson is inspired by Beyoncé but they make totally different music. The only thing they have in common is being foreign/exotic lightskin girls who are trying to make it in America with a unique sound ( and that was only at the beginning of Rihannas career cause she switched genres on her second album).

None of the world cup promo you're talking about had anything to do with Apop, she sung the national anthem and her feature with future which is not in the album. Since when is the met gala musical promo, name one artist who had saw a jump in a their streams because they were at the met gala.

The today show performance was months ago and it was for Chanel way after it blew up.

Can you guys please stop acting as if Tyla had an abundance of meaningful promo when she did not. Like yes a grammy gives you musical credibility (e.g Victoria Monet) but it doesn't trump payola, industry connections, investment and playlisting (e.g Katseye).

Honestly, I don't get why people are being obtuse? This is always the type of discussion or backlash an artist with a lot of "next big thing" type of hype receives when they fail to deliver on that promise.

I don't think it's the Rihanna comparisons and/or Tyla, Epic or her management aspiring to be the Gen Z Rihanna is the problem. The issue is that she isn't seeing that type of early 2007-2013 Rihanna success.

As others in this thread have said, it's evident that Tyla and/or the A&R department at Epic just don't have the ear for hits to make her the global superstar it felt like she was on her way to becoming in 2023/2024.

I liked the album on my first listen, but after taking the time to digest all the songs and giving the whole album a few more listens, I'm actually OBSESSED with it now. Like, every single song is hitting so hard...I'm surprised so many people don't like it, especially since it's objectively a cohesive body of work. Taste may be subjective, but you can't deny the level of quality, care, and craftsmanship that went into this album.

Also, why is anyone acting surprised at her numbers and calling her a flop and whatnot? As far as I am concerned, her songs usually start slow and then rise, i.e. Chanel. She's still not a household name or a huge name in general, so it's pretty unfair to expect so much from her already.

If you're comparing Tyla's and Rihannas career trajectories it would mean Tyla would have abandoned amapiano two years ago but that's not the case, at this point of her career Rihanna was releasing pure pop music.

Yeah again I don't think you noticed the discourse happening around the comment you're quoting. I am AGAINST the comparison. Not sure how it's not clear. Also, I'm not a Rihanna stan or a Tyla hater. I actually would like for her to branch off to the music we DO deem accessible so she can actually find the global success she's seeking. Inspiration is fine but trying to replicate is different. Right now what we do know is her career is not resembling Rihanna's in terms of sound, trajectory, success, or global recognition. So it's pointless to compare them. Again this rewriting of history as if a good portion of Tyla's supporters in the beginning weren't Rihanna fans (myself included). lol all this fanfic just to hate on a young girl. Tyla was explaining why we thought she was being ignored, the navy started attacking Tyla saying she was passive aggressive in the video,that's where the fight started, stop changing the narrative. Tyla has consistent hits with little to no promo. She'll be fine She's staying true to herself and her inspirations. Success will come naturally to her if she sticks to what her fanbase likes about her and her music for. It got her to where she is as an artist from South Africa. She doesn't make music for the people who moan about her not making the type of music they want her to make or demanding she goes into a writing camp with Max Martin rather than continue to work with the people she admires.
