I love her being sexual when the song calls for it, but I really miss the magic of her old songwriting. She can be the freakiest woman ever and she still manages to hold back, which made it more sexy. A bulk of her pre-self-titled material was exactly like this. Most of the time, you wouldn't even know it's about sex unless you really sit down and listen to the words. I miss that. It's sensual. I miss the restraint.

Nowadays, she just says it. And sometimes it's fun. Sometimes it's hilarious. But a lot of times, it gets really jarring. Especially when they're back-to-back-to-back like it is in ST, Renny and CC.

I think Imma lil late, but my oh my is Raye's Click Clack Symphony incredibly Bey coded. Both in terms of her established angling and also what she could/should be doing for Act III.

Taking it a step further, the visual is INSANE. Very shocked to see that it's Dave Meyers, because for as iconic as he is, his aesthetic is a lot more polished and outlandish. This was gritty, quirky, VERY British, and yet still somehow big and innovative.

I've been on the fence about the whole Nadia Lee Cohen thing, given that I don't want Bey pushing herself into a brand of edgy that potentially isn't her (so becomes a case of being surrealist/edgy for edgy's sake),

But...if they can pull off something like this (as I see choreo becoming less and less of a facet of Bey's output in this stage of her career), I'll be very happy.

It's kind of amazing that most of Beyoncé's albums except her debut (and lowkey 4*) have a very clearly defined concepts that are greater than the sum of their parts. Those two are the only albums that could reasonably be defined as "just a collection of songs". And her concepts are never about a "new sound" or "new look" even if those are present, but a new sound or look backed behind an actual thematic reason.


*4 sorta has a theme/concept of like...R&B music in various forms from various eras, but beyond genre there's not much more to say about it whereas EIL, TG, REN, and CC, while all are exploring genre, also have more to say other than "we're doing this right now." Also I guess DIL's concept is "love" but that's so cliché and it's so not really explored on the album rather than it being love songs that I don't think it counts.
