In today's pop landscape, we're seeing younger artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish reshaping culture with bold, innovative albums that already feel essential to this generation. At the same time, established icons such as Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, and Beyoncé continue to push creative boundaries and release projects with widespread acclaim and that spark cultural conversation.

 

Taylor Swift however hasn't managed to achieve that same impact in quite some time. With her latest album receiving lukewarm responses yet again outside of her fanbase, it's becoming clearer that the once acclaimed singer-songwriter has shifted into a more corporate, manufactured role, basically a diminished version of the artist she used to be.

 

While she remains a dominant commercial force, in terms of artistry, innovation, and cultural respect, Swift now feels more aligned with the likes of Katy Perry or Ed Sheeran than with the peers she's often still compared to.

 

So the question is: What went wrong with Taylor Swift?

She made her career out of an image of a victimized ingenue. But at some point in time she became arguably the most powerful woman in the industry and that narrative doesn't work anymore. Being supposedly wronged by people is where she gets her inspiration from, and after all these years, she didn't learn to get her creativity out of anything else. Music that was once relatable now is just the diary of a billionaire woman talking about her white people problems.

She's 5 days away from becoming the best selling female artist of all time. Nothing went wrong 

burnout from prolific music releases and a near endless tour have killed her creativity

 

but she realises this is her commercial peak so the inner profit maximiser says keep going

Wow, couldn't have said it any better 

Can't remember her having two mediocre albums in a row. Last time that (almost) happened she pulled herself together and did Folkmore and Red TV (which are the main reason for her current commercial super-success).

 

I say 'almost' because there are some heartfelt pop gems on Rep and Lover (Cornelia Street, Afterglow, Call it what you want etc) that are nowhere to be found on TTPD and this latest release. I'm not going to comment on her public persona because I don't think that should be relevant, but she really sounds like she has nothing new or important to say in 2025 compared to 2019-2022

Talking about sales when the quality of the music is what's in question here…..

Nothing went wrong, she's just been uninspired since after folklore/evermore. Midnights (very good album) was pretty much reputation (Taylor's Version) (from the Vault) tracks and from TTPD you could tell she had nothing much to say, but she still served vibes and made those who already consumed her albums happy. This new album is the result of her being in a stable relationship where she's happy - not the inspiration behind artists' best works usually, but good for her.

What went wrong: "fans" and others expectations of what she should do.

OTHs talking about quality… You can't be more biased than that 

She will still sell a lot so nothing went wrong.
