why do artist do this and name other examples.

 

i was always curious of why Nicki made a video to Hard White though it was never released as a single.

The same with MTS Movie

 

i thought it was a gift to the fans or if they have extra $$$ in they budget. 

Addison's Times Like These but I guess it could still be pushed as a single in the future

in her case it was prob just to have some more new content out on album release day + it is supposedly a visual album

Gaga does this almost every album cycle now. It doesn't sell singles but it cultivates a profitable fanbase.

It's a way of keeping the album alive a bit I think, keeps the focus on the era rather than just letting things drift. But I tend to think of it being more useful as an indie thing when a song might possibly be sent to alternative radio but no one expects it to take off or anything

I wish that was true but In the past 10 years we've gotten one video from a non single

I think 911 was in fact a single, they released it in a couple of European countries and lbf, that song had a proper era (for a Chromatica single) and even got performed at VMAs

It's different for every case, but majority of time a song may have a video filmed for it way before it's ever released because it was planned to be a single, but for whatever reason plans change (they cut the era early, another single is chosen etc.). Then artist/label will still release the visual anyway either for fans or to see what the reception for the song will be since they already have the video filmed and ready to go. 

One of the first things Labels do for an album release is pick/plan all the songs that willl get single treatment.

The fact Hunger TV gave us a better video than what Polydor would usually give Cheryl post-lead.

911 was a single though. it got remixes and a radio push.

Birthday, Dance Again and Talk really should've been singles
