This album is so perfect. Her best for me. 

Finally had the chance to sit down and listen to this after several attempts and issa slay 💅🏻 I would definitely say "David" is my favorite on here. Closely followed by "GRWM" and "What Was That."

I really think this album deserves a bit more attention. It may not be at the level of previous work, but it only appreciates in replay value. Even the wave of positive reviews left no mark. Guess we'll see if year end lists remember Virgin.

Agreed! It really feels like it came and went with the public… but I'm still listening to it all the time. I sadly don't think it'll get a lot of Grammy noms, which I know isn't her goal, but it would be nice to see some recognition for this amazing body of work. Hopefully the tour will bring back some buzz/hype for the era.

Agree. It is the very best album of the year so far for me. Nothing else comes close.

It's honestly crazy like NO ONE is talking about it and it's like... hello, one of THEE singular most fascinating artists of our time just released some of her best work?? Idk i think she put a lot of people off with what felt like non-binary chatter, maybe ATRL doesn't feel this way but at least in my life that feels like a topic everyone was talking about a few years ago and now really can't be bothered with.

Sadly, I think Solar Power did a lot of damage to her with the GP and the media at large. Not the album itself but how people/the press received it. The lashings were quite incredible.

 

And yeah, I don't think the singles campaign really helped the album at all, sadly. All are impecable songs. I would say Hammer is my favourite single of all singles Ive heard this year so far. The album is on par with Melodrama. Yet, she gets ignored. I think it is really unfair and just speaks at where the industry is at. I am glad Lorde doesn't compromise her artistry for cheap singles/marketing like Taylor and Gaga, so at least we have excellent, unique music to enjoy rather than most of the pop slop that is out there. 

 

Sadly, I can't see her getting any Grammys, though I would hope she could get some nominations at least. Had the album been successful, I would think it would have at least been in the run for Best Alternative or even Album of The Year. But alas, I think she will just get, at best, nominations for Best Pop Album or Best Alternative Album or whatever.. But it is ok, since some of the best artists out there barely saw much Grammy recognition (like Bjork).

That's why I'm a little surprised. The reviews were practically glowing. I don't expect anything from the Grammys this time around either, but this era might be a positive reminder of her work for the voters in the next era. We'll see!

i feel like this album didn't get the bigger praise/moment it deserved. i can't stop listening from start to finish these days and i never really like listening to albums in their entirety

I've been coming back to the singles in recent days, after kinda ignoring them a bit after the album release, and I'm hearing a few details I might have missed earlier. The chord progressions on a couple of songs like Hammer and Man of the Year aren't typical choices for pop singles, which helps give them a more distinct character that stands out from the more conventional songs like What Was That.

You usually need a big single and commercially successful album just to get a pop nomination and Melodrama didn't get a pop nomination with a #1 album and top 20 single.

I don't know why labels keep pushing this 45387 pre-singles strategy for artists like Lorde, when she clearly could have benefited a lot from dropping the album all at once or at least a few days after the first single (which had a great roll-out.)

 

but I also think there's a little bit of an overreaction here. she gathered some great attention and some cute moments for the album, the album is just not digestible enough for the masses and she is just more quiet now and there's nothing much to discuss (and although alt music can chart sometimes, they're the exception.)

 

I think she's very aware of the path she consciously chose as an artist and I think it's paying off in the end, she just sold out an extensive arena tour around the world and her fanbase and her cult stat solidified and it's paving the way for more commercial success in the future (if she wants to)

Finally listened over the weekend. My two favorites were Shapeshifter and If She Could See Me Now. A nice 6.5/10 overall.

Every track's hitting me so hard after the show in Austin. Omg AOTY for me 

I've been loving the live performances from the tour.

 

The Ultrasound tour appears to have given the album a bit of a boost on streaming, with Spotify plays for Virgin reaching just over 352 million plays, three months after release.

For comparison, Solar Power did not reach the 350m+ milestone until mid July 2022, which was almost 11 months after the album release and with two bonus tracks added, making a total of 14 tracks.
