Lorde - 'Virgin'

So you didn't like Virgin?

I liked it, and the standouts for me are Hammer, Shapeshifter, Favourite Daughter, first half of MOTY, and Current Affairs is growing on me. It makes me emotional when I listen to it. The album just doesn't have much replay value for me, I don't really think about wanting to listen to it again that much. While I love the lyrics, personally I thought it sounded a bit dated on arrival on some songs. But I have never been the biggest fan of Jim-E Stack's production. With PH and Melo I was completely intoxicated for years after the day of their release. I really do think Ella should go totally left field with producers she chooses to work with in the future. I think someone like OPN or Arca could make Virgin sound so much more in tune with the concept

ijbol remember when Solar Power had no CD bc of her climate activism - she said F the planet for this album, we cheered!

  • I believe Melodrama remains her magnum opus, but Virgin sounds absolutely incredible. It's the Lorde we know, yet it also feels incredibly refreshing. In Hammer, she mentioned, "I might be born again,

That's sad. I loved the album, it's amazing. It's up there with Melodrama to me.

This is random but playing Guillotine by  Banks as the "first track" of this album is impeccable

lemme try

These pictures from her November 2022 instagram stories are very "If She Could See Me Now".

This was from when she turned 26.

after virgin tour she needs to get back into the studio immediately….waiting 4 years for a 12 track album isn't cute anymore and the concept of L5 coming when i'm 30 is making me nauseous. i'm still loving virgin tho x

I think she was trying to do that for this album. She was working on tracks in 2022 while she was on tour and Jim-E Stack was her support act. But in 2023 she went through a relationship break up, an eating disorder and several other changes and I don't think some of those early tracks made sense for her to include any more.

Also, a rushed album will be much worse for her than making people wait again, because reviewers will compare every new album to Melodrama and if they think it doesn't measure up, those publications will give her terrible reviews. People need to stop asking for her to release a 20-30 track album too - there are very few good 20+ albums.

My fear is that if the rumours about her and Jim-E Stack being a couple are true (and if you look at them during the Glastonbury performance it certainly gives that impression), then they better not break up during the recording of L5 and have her decide to start again.

Shapeshifter was always a bop but it's hitting extra hard lately

I have to admit that at first I didn't like the album, except for a few tracks.

But yesterday something happened. I was walking in the woods, lost in my thoughts, sweaty. And all of a sudden, I was overwhelmed by many emotions.

girl.... the problem was your song choice to play with friends :rip: should've bopped to WWT instead :jonnycat:

The production on Virgin is not it, feels very mute and watered down. She should work with Floating Point tbh
