David is kinda SOTY for me

 

it doesn't have a boring bit that a typical album closer has (iykyk), the entire song works so well, not to mention the final part

My entire album ranking has changed since release week EXCEPT… Shapeshifter still being my least favorite. I just don't get what y'all are hearing? Just because it's an upbeat Lorde song after Solar Power does not automatically make it good. The talking verses are quite horrendous and I think that's what the real turn off is for me. But if you love it, hey I'm happy for you! Every other song remains a 10/10

 

In other news, David climbed to the top of my ranking after starting off around #8  Current Affairs keeps rising too!

Some objective numbers, Metacritic score by main producers.

79 Joel Little (Pure Heroine)
80 Jack Antonoff (average across 2 albums)
82 Jim-E Stack (Virgin)

 

Plus Jim-E did a great job with Caroline Polachek, Bon Iver and others.
He can be the main producer again with a few additional guest producers, maybe Dev Hynes and a few others that weren't on Virgin.

 

Having said that, I'd like to see some more a guitar based sounds like Current Affairs, which is the only song on the album he didn't co-write.

Current Affairs is also the only song with a verse that might be about him (or at least they were together that day in the park).

Fabiana Palladino mentioned on her instagram that "Current Affairs" was written when she was in London in July 2024.

She also mentioned writing "If She Could See Me Now" with Lorde in 2023.

Okay firstly, I don't think metacritic numbers tell much at all. Jack Antonoff has lower because he is credited on more work, which affects the statistic. And I'm not saying Lorde should work with Antonoff again

 

Personally, I just don't think Jim-E Stack's stuff is that great. His work with Caroline is strong because Danny L Harle was the main producer

 

I'd rather see Lorde work with someone else as her main producer(s)

I'm not sure what you mean by Jack being credited for more work, I was just counting the average of the two albums he did with Lorde.

 

Also, you don't have to go by metacritic, you can use AOTY or ADM where Virgin ranks as one of the best pop albums of the year so far, especially if you skip the indie/alternative artists and just count the actual pop artists with Top 5 charting albums.

Oh, sorry! I didn't realise that's what you were doing metascore-wise. I thought it was an average of all of their work lol

 

Again, though, I really don't pay that much attention to charting and scores. To me it just doesn't sound as good as it could, and high charting is not going to change that perception

I want to see Kevin Parker, Ariel Rechtshaid, Rostam Batmanglij, and Danny L Harle work with her.

 

I feel the former three would have done Solar Power justice and given it the rich colours and textures that it needed. Jack simply doesn't work well for what Lorde had in mind for that album. I feel Women in Music Pt. III was more in line with the ideas that Lorde had for Solar Power, purely from a production standpoint, which Ariel and Rostam helped realize. Danny did such good on on the remix of "Girl, so confusing" and Lorde's voice fit so well in his production world that I would love to see that sound explored more.

Gonna put Virgin on hold while I spend a week at the beach vibing to Solar Power

Based on the mostly positive response to this album, I imagine she'll still work with Jim-E (at least in part) for the next one. I do wonder if this time around she feels supported enough by the audience to explore more out-there choices, or if this solidified her direction in not pushing the limits of what listeners will accept. I doubt she will go full Solar Power again, but in theory, would she let herself get caught up in a high concept album?
