"Capitalist Taylor" slammed by long-time fan

Today, as seemingly countless Swift fans are left without tickets to the upcoming tour that will showcase her different “eras”—from curly-haired and Southern accent Taylor to rainbow-gay Pride Taylor—we’re faced with the least fun version of Swift yet: Capitalist Taylor. So far, the bulk of the outrage has fallen on Ticketmaster, the monopolistic concert-and-ticketing conglomerate, while Swift has received comparably less opprobrium, perhaps because of the intimate-seeming fandom relationship she has cultivated over her career. But as that A&F catalog showed all those years ago, Swift has always been one for cultivating brand synergy. Fans, finally noticing this, seem heartbroken.

Slowly, it seemed to dawn on fans how much Swift herself stood to benefit even from this crappy ticket-buying experience. A viral TikTok features a woman sitting despondently in her car beneath text declaring that the whole debacle “was Taylor’s capitalistic circus on full display…I’m going to say I’m officially turned off by Taylor.”

But it’s still the fans she’s extracting money from, and for some of us, being asked to pay hundreds of dollars to see her live (if we’re very lucky!) feels disorienting, especially when our parasocial relationships with her can run so deep.

I can accept that in the following decade-plus, this woman has simply become too popular for me to see her tour right now. I understand that she should earn money in exchange for her work. And Swift certainly did not invent the idea of being a spokesmodel for goods and services. But nonetheless it kind of sucks to be turning over the poetry of Midnights, while Capitalist Taylor is taking the opportunity to try to sell me a credit card and yet another shirt.

This summer, I got an email from Taylor Nation, Swift’s company. It wasn’t announcing new music, or alerting me of tour dates. It was letting me know about a Memorial Day sale on branded towels. Yes, my favorite poet was sending me a junk mailer: If I bought two towels, I could get 10 percent off.

“It goes without saying that I’m extremely protective of my fans,” she writes in her statement Friday. Actually, I think we can say that she’s not. And that’s fine. It’s just the entertainment business. It was never personal.

I mean she always been money and success focused, not sure why people are acting like this is brand new information. Also not sure

why some fans are feeling entitled to ricket sales. And lol "poet" :deadbanana4:

yeah, no s*** :rip:

Did they just figure that out today?.... damn, get it together.

Hope those longtime fans becomes fans of someone else.

Imagine direct your anger to the artist becauss you cannot get tickets. You are not more special than other fans. Get over yourself. Bye.

No amount of money could make me post something like this :rip:

Parasocial freaks need a reality check STAT. It's also ridiculous that Taylor is the one who's an evil capitalist 'exploiting' her fans by selling music while her peers casually rake in BILLIONS selling makeup :rip:

The tour sold out, she’s extremely popular.

That’s it, it’s really not this complicated

Having a millennial fan base is fun and games until you do something minor that sets them off. They resort to their 2014 Buzzfeed heyday and will do anything to pull you down.

The self drag of it all :ahh:

Like is it really her fault that a bunch of delulu fans actually believed they had a personal relationship with a global near-billionare superstar :rip:

Can you really not understand why someone would be frustrated if they spent $200 buying THE SAME ALBUM MULTIPLE TIMES under the pretense that this would make them eligible for a concert ticket (which they would then spend more money on) only to not be able to get a ticket?

SERIOUSLY. These people need to get a ******* grip. I wanted a GPU the last 3 years but there's a million issues. Tons of people want new Nike shoes. Not everyone is going to get one.

This is ridiculous. She is mega popular and maybe in what seems to be her career peak. Ticket Master messed up the queuing system and promised things they could not deliver. They have a monopoly that is unjustified. That's it yall. It's low key that simple. Yet some of these sasaeng fans are deluding themselves into placing the blame on Taylor when it literally does not make sense to do so. :skull: Like grow up and move on. I'm for sure not going to be able to get tickets for her Canadian shows whenever she announces them. It's part of life yall...you don't always get what you want :skull: can't believe some ppl havn't learned that lesson yet :skull:

But does Nike get you to spend $300+ on the same pair of shoelaces 30 times in order to 'increase your chances' of getting a pair of shoes? I wouldn't be surprised if they did actually now that I'm writing it out...

This was known even back in her country days, this is such a non-issue. Suck that her fans had suffer so she could continue to destroy the atmosphere in her private jet.

But, you get you got because money has always been her only motivation.

I mean, the idea that any concert tickets could be charged for close to $1k-$3k by the artist is ridiculous. Add in then resellers having tickets go for $15k and it's like.. what? :deadbanana4:

Commercial recording musicians see touring as their big money-maker and the reality is that you can't get to a place where Ticketmaster's monopolization of the industry is undone while not popping the ticket pricing bubble. You can't have a fair and equitable touring industry not swallowed up by one mega-corporation *and* these obscene tactics where Ticketmaster somehow always fails to stop bot resellers or dynamic pricing, used on past tours.

This isn't something personal or specific about Taylor though. Most commercial recording musicians - I'm using that term here over artist intentionally - have no incentive to stop Ticketmaster's actions that are intended to extract as much profit as possible from the consumer in exchange for the live music experience. Taylor's not the one being exploited - the fans are, for her benefit materially, by the inherent reality of her music becoming a commodity, and so it becomes an antsy tightrope to walk.

It's just funny that Pearl Jam in the 90s were trying to take down Ticketmaster for charging 10% fees on $18 tickets and finding tickets in the hundreds of dollars obscene and now the big "talk" around Ticketmaster is about how they should have ensured the bandwidth to make sure Capitol One Platinum Deluxe cardholders got a spot in line!! :toofunny3: Good aim, wrong target!

This has always been Taylor? She has always been a capitalist queen? Why reprimand it now

No sh*t. Some of her fans will brag to the heavens about "The Music Industry" & how powerful + huge she is. That's all grand and well, but then don't act surprised about the capitalistic game. No one is forcing them to buy into the "My fans and me against the world" guise, but if they wanna believe they're besties with a multi-millionaire woman that's a them problem.

It's amusing at this point though.
