Her own envelope-pushing, the changing nature of the game, plus her capitalist nature have kind of boxed her into a corner -- and us too by proxy. 

 

The girls just don't stream music videos on YT like that anymore. So, for an act like Bey who has long been about serving up her releases as a "body of work", she arguably would short-change herself if simply dropping her ish on YouTube all regular-degular. 

 

And I mean that figuratively and literally. 

 

On the one hand, the optics of the AHAP video (for example) sitting stuck at 7/8 million views on her channel does not "look" good when the Arianas/K-Pop girls are clearing 100 million views in days. Not a fair comparison, but trust that she will be compared. She's worked way too hard to dismantle the need for her to be measured by that yardstick. 

 

Similarly, sis is all about commerce. In the simplest terms, she'll (for the foreseeable future) always get a bigger lump-sum bag from a streamers like Netflix, Disney, Prime for these ostentatious "visual albums" than she would the returns from dropping videos on YT that pays nickels and dimes (literally) for video views. 

 

I too miss the simpler days when she followed the normal pop star path, but her Queendom is anchored in her extraness these days, It is what it is and I made peace with it. 

 

I'm more so intrigued to see how she'll keep one upping her visual drops. She's essentially been doing the same thing with savvy gimmicks to differentiate them on a surface level (ST = unconnected videos for every song, Lemonade = loose theme, BIK = Lion King retelling). It's time to swish up the format.

 

A an interactive series (like Black Mirror's Netflix thing with alternate endings) would be cute as would a full fledged theatrical release. She'd benefit from a new angle and I trust they are coming with one. 

 

The comparisons to Black is King being released a year later don't really make any sense to me tbh. The GP didn't care about The Gift so she was a little naive thinking the film would make any difference.

 

Renaissance is different. This is the first Bey album people have been this engaged with for this long in literally 15 years. I think if the visuals come anytime between now and the anniversary, it's going to be an event.

It’s not like nobody cared about Black Is King either… The streaming numbers before that were bad BAD, worse than EIL even. It will reach 1000m eventually thanks to Black Is King. The visuals could still do wonders for Renaissance longevity (something Lemonade is lacking), specially if released in the right platforms.

Granted "anything can happen", Bey is not the artist to scrap or walk anything back she has announced publicly. We have over 20 years of proof of that.

 

I do agree, though, that anything past the one year mark for the visuals actually does not make much sense beyond "visuals for visuals sake". Ala BIK.

 

I been trying to see the logic in holding the visuals back this long and definitely feel they've been re-shooting and re-editing ish for whatever reason. But, save for some kind of game-changing concept or jaw-dropping angle, anything past the 1 year mark makes the whole "missing visuals" narrative the official and irreversible thorn in the side of the era.  Literally just a bolt-on (when they arrive) and a case of the era  being exactly what it is with or without them. 

 

The only slight upside is that she will have successfully dismantled the argument/reality that she "needs" visuals to chart. It has admittedly been nice being back in a time where Bey's music is all over radio, social media, and in the clurrbs....on the merit of the music alone. It's a nice shift from the "hype" being time-capped to the launch of "visual film" and tour alone. 

 

At the same time, she need not delete one of the core pillars of her brand (being a visual-led artist).  So, roll on July 29th.
