Lessons you learned from dating apps?

What did you learn from online dating? Inspired by this quote from a similar thread on reddit:

No matter how awesome you are, you're always being compared to an imaginary match that has yet to even manifest. There is so much variety to choose from, but when we pause to consider those options, ironically, we end up with no one.

Well, I'm seeing a guy I met on Bumble. We had sex three times, but I'm unsure if he wants a serious relationship or not...

The lesson I learned is to move quickly. There's a waste of time to talk with someone for more than a week. You should switch to Messenger or Instagram a few days after the chat begins and start video-chatting.

Keep your expectations low because disappointment is inevitable. I have far too many examples of hitting it off with someone on the apps and then when I try to follow through with meeting in person it's crickets. Why are you wasting both our times?

I also think it's important to be intentional with how you use the apps (which is why I always prefer to meet in person sooner rather than later). If we're not looking for the same thing then keep it moving. I also need to stop getting involved with emotionally unavailable men rip

Never give them your number or instagram after 2 days or something. Go on a date first.

If there is a pic with more than one person on it the profile belongs to the ugliest person in the pic

Meet up asap instead of texting for weeks. It's no use getting attached to an idea of a person that doesn't match reality because you don't want to get to know them face to face.

That most single people are there for a reason and are chronically unsuitable as partners

No, they just become very annoying very quickly. When you're talking just through the app I feel like you can control how much access they have to you, which for me is ideal during this early talking stages.

if wearing a hat bald

if wearing sunglasses crows feet

if nipple rings - used

if hair brush foward bad hairline

if pix look old they are and your date will be 20 years older

I've learned that you can't really portray yourself accurately whatsoever on dating apps, and that's the main reason they never really work for me. I have a beard and am very hairy and I def give more masc in my pictures than I am and then in person I'm just really sweet and giggly and I think I'm not attracting the kinda guys that are into that on the apps. I've been off them for a while again and don't see myself going back anytime soon, slowly but surely finding other avenues in the dating world- in person mostly. Nothing yet but soon hopefully xx

Don't get attached. Just have sex and move on.

The person you're talking to is also talking and hooking up with 10 more guys and some of them are even your close friends.

If you want something serious, look for friends or friend of friends.

There’s different lessons depending on what you’re going for. I ended a 5 year relationship last summer and started doing dating and hookup apps for the first time seriously.

Dating apps taught me a lot for the better. This one guy I was talking to was into me, but said my lack of confidence (at the time) was kind of a turn off to him. I’d do a lot of “if you wanna do this, it’s cool. it’s fine if you don’t too.” and he’s like you don’t have to keep doing that. I didn’t understand what he was getting at until our last convo. We had stopped talking for a few weeks and I hadn’t messaged him. He found out I was talking to other guys too and seemed bothered. He was like you should put out there if you like me or not. So I said I do, but you’re not the only person i’m talking to and i’m not gonna put all my effort into one thing. I guess that was too much confidence for him lol.

The other experiences have been cool. I was really into this one guy and we planned to meet up in July, but between life and school we just decided to be friends. It sucked bc I really liked him, and he gave me what I needed to build myself up after ending things with my ex.

I started dating this one guy after we hooked up on Grindr. He was really nice.

As far as hookup apps go, there’s somebody out there for you. Even if you don’t think you are desirable. I’m a bigger guy (who’s getting thinner hihi down 150 lbs) who pulls a lot of fit, twunky guys (my type tbh). I let people come to me mostly, but when I do strike up convos first it’s bc there’s interest there based on the profile.

Lessons:

  • a cute face can overcome a less than “desirable” body. a hot body cannot overcome an ugly face.

  • Leave these DL men alone. Idc how dl they are, not sending a pic is stupid.

  • Meeting up without a face pic is weird. See #2. Also people know if they’re not attractive it’s why they don’t wanna send a face pic most times.

  • Use IG or snap to verify

You definitely should give them your Instagram. rip

Don't use them.

Even though I met my current husband on one of them.

Also don't set high expectations, leads to a lot of disappointment.

Hell no. Don't give any details like that for a first date. If you like them enough after the first date then yes, give your Instagram and your number

Main lesson i learned from dating apps: stop using dating apps/consider being asexual
