Mariah dominated the 90s like no other and with only ~3 years left in this decade it should be ok to gauge how Taylor's domination in the 2020s compares. Share your thoughts.

There is zero coherent case for Mariah. By the decade's end, Taylor will have MUCH more acclaim, MUCH better touring, and MUCH higher equivalent units. Even if you are one of those people that insist

Taylor dominated every country globally, Mariah was not known globally in LATAM, Europe and West/South Asia/North Africa.

Taylor's lowest placement on IFPI's global artists chart this decade is #2. The last time (and only time) a female artist not named Taylor placed that high was Adele in 2015

Mariah is more local (even Björk is bigger than her in the UK lol). Taylor started out local but gained a global following in the 10s.

Mariah isn't a touring force, she lacks Taylor's acclaim and Taylor's success is unprecedented for women she's in a league with Madonna whereas Mariah with all her radio payola and novelty Christmas music still is playing catch up with Celine Dion.

Y'all only ever call black artists local btw

Noticing a pattern

Taylor bigger decade but Mariah had much more hits in the 90s than Taylor has this decade. Taylor only has Cruel Summer, Anti-Hero & TFOO whereas Mariah's 90s smashes are too many to even count

The IFPI Artist Chart exists since 2014. You have no point of reference before that.

You and @TaylorsSquad should really do some research before posting stupid ****.

Bigger decade overall? Probably Taylor in both the US and global.

Bigger decade with great vocals through the airwaves and talent and organic success? Mariah in both the US and globally.

PS. Compare Taylor's global decade to those of Madonna or Celine and she'd probably lose.

Taylor was called local throughout her career until the 2020s though.

Can't take a Nurotec fan seriously because your fave will never be apart of these conversations aside from who burned out fastest after their debut album threads heart

I mean Mariah sold what 100 million copies (pure) of albums in the 90s and had 16 number ones. Taylor has impressive streams this decade and her touring stats from this decade are also very impressive, but I think overall it's Mariah.

Mariah

Because she released smash albums and multiple smash singles. Het talent from that decade inspired many singers that came after her.
Not everyone has that.

Taylor is only bigger in touring. But the rest? Mariah.

This lie that Mariah wasn't known outside the U.S. has been debunked plenty of times. She's outsold Taylor in all those markets you mentioned and by quite a margin too rip

Are you five years old or something? You taking my takes on your inorganic fave seriously has nothing to do with the fact that the artist chart didn't exist before 2014 making it totally irrelevant to this topic about Mariah's reign in the 90s when there was no such chart. ace

And today's touring market is much, much bigger than the one in the 90s which is why artists today outgross the biggest tours of then. Mariah didn't even tour that much in the 90s.

Mariah's stats are impressive, no doubt.

But Taylor's pure sales are out of this world for 2020s, multiple million debut in 2020s alone. And she also has 10 #1s in 2020s, can easily reach 16 mark by the ned of this decade.

This is a tough one. Mariah sold more, had way more hits and much bigger hits, but Taylor has way more longevity on BB200, even placing 5 albums inside the top 10 multiple times during the Eras tour. On paper Taylor's success seems more impressive on the strength of album longevity and album opening weeks (especially compared to everyone else this decade), but somehow Taylor's success seems very fanbase concentrated. And that fanbase is taking advantage of the streaming era album sale counting that keeps her albums afloat for very long (just like everyone else's who is successful this decade). So in a way Taylor's success is a bit of smoke and mirrors situation, where as Mariah's 90s was completely unprecedented and unrivalled by anyone before and since and was a true cultural force that still resonates to this day. I'd say only The Beatles' 60s can compare.

Yeah, definitely. Social media has also played a big role. Some people go to concerts not only to experience the show, but also because they want to post about it and share the experience online.

It feels like everything is more heavily consumed and documented than it used to be. I notice the same thing whenever I go on vacation... every time I visit a popular destination, there seem to be more and more turists. Social media has made travel and concerts much more visible and has turned certain places and experiences into things people feel they HAVE to see and post about. People nowadays often seem to travel and visit concerts partly for the experience itself and partly for the content they can create from it.

But this is a discussion for another topic celestial4

Music Box sales in Europe:

(Just one Mariah album) 8.3M copies

Taylor Swift album sales in Europe:

Taylor Swift 282K

Fearless 852K

Speak Now 432K

Red 990K

1989 1.8M

Reputation 615K

Lover 435K

Folklore 412K

Evermore 310K

Midnights 642K

TTPD 765K

TLOASG 687K

Total of all 12 Taylor studio albums Europe sales: 8.2M

And then some member will say how Taylor did much better in Europe (and other markets) than prime Mariah. Like some of you people are ridiculous deadbanana4

One of Mariah's 90s eras is still clearing all your favs on an annual basis.

She accumulates more units in a quarter from her holiday releases than most discographies do in a year.

Autumn is here. Defrosting in progress

I think all of what Taylor is doing is also very impressive. I just think that selling 100M pure album units in one decade is far more impressive.

I think it's very possible for Taylor to also get 6 more number ones by the end of the decade, but they're not going to spend a cumulative 63 weeks at the top of the charts the way Mariah was able to do with hers.

Taylor has a very coordinated fanbase that helps her get those impressive first week sales. Which isn't a small feat either, but not the same as the kind of numbers Mariah was pulling in the 90s.

I think Taylor is bigger in terms of chart points. Her BB200 stats are insane. I wouldn't be surprised if she's the most successful artist of all time in the USA (or ends up there by the end of the decade).

Not sure about WW. I think Mariah was actually bigger at her peak in Europe but both of are US-centric artists so I don't think it makes much difference.
