And the grammys were not the kind of audience and fame driven awards.

I won't name names, but I remember seeing an interview of a person working in the music industry saying that with specific artists it doesn't matter how horrible their music is their fans will still buy it and they will never admit that it's bad and that's why it's important to have a big fan base. This seems to be the case here too.
