Omg I think it's still that way... Back when I used to buy multiple copies of my favorite artists' new album and cared about numbers more I would try to go through self checkout but if I couldn't I would make the poor cashier ring each one separately 😭 I just know that target hates my guts to this day

I remember reading an article years ago, I'll update with a link if I can find it, but the article went into all the ways NSYNC fans used to inflate the numbers. They literally organized mass buyouts when No Strings Attached came out because they wanted to beat the record held by the Backstreet Boys at the time. And that was with just one variant. Like many thousands of rabid teenage fans went to the store and bought stacks of literally the same CD, just to get one over on the rival boyband. So, yeah, literally nothing has changed lmao

I've been a Gaga fan for nearly 17 years at this point so this is coming from a place of love, if you could call it that. Hiding behind Adele because Gaga hasn't had a platinum debut in 14 years is truly pathetic. Die with a smile may end up the hot 100 year end #1, but we can both agree she doesn't sell albums like either of the women you spend every waking moment pitting against each other..
