I think the genre will always have a niche fanbase of supporters (including me on the lowest of keys) but has it peaked in terms of popularity?

The biggest names: BTS & BlackPink have just released their latest projects and they have both underperformed a bit relative to their typical standards. The next group set to carry the mantle was NewJeans but they're stuck in limbo and no other 4th/5th gen group seems to have caught up popularity-wise.

It's just over saturated and nothing new, it's the same case to Katy Perry, except you apply it to a genre.

You're talking about the male fanbases. There is nothing wrong with the female fanbases of K-pop.

OT: No. Aespa, IVE, NJZ, IDLE, Twice and BlackPink are all still huge and relevant. ATRL's faves haven't touched 1M+ sales in years and these women all do it twice a year

the premise is just unappealing. these aren't artists, just workers that are hired on contract by those big conglomerates and once they are done they are discarded and replaced by other sheep. it just stinks with corporatism.

Blackpink tanked but BTS are doing fine yall are doing the most anyway this genre is slowly falling even in korea you can #1 by barely surpassing 200k unique listeners.

The kpopmania might be over, but I think the music itself is getting more recognition, if that makes sense? Like, during the past 8 years, kpop was everywhere and the fans and the culture around it was massive but the actual music was still not getting any sort of attention and now, I feel like the songs get more streams, chart better outside of Korea and the GP have a little bit more of respect and love for it.

Both of them were always smoke and mirrors and with both groups signaling they want to focus on solos and look past their labels, the pr machine is grinding to a halt. ALL pop music stats are heavily driven by label investment and kpop labels have always been willing to pull the plug on top acts to keep control of the industry. SNSD is a great example of this, members left the label but not the group around when their 6th album came out and despite having a fanbase big enough to sell out stadiums anywhere on earth if they pleased, the album and single basically charted nowhere for any significant amount of time. The company boasted to shareholders about cutting off their top(and until recently, the best selling kpop girl group ever) act as a good thing for overall growth.

There are still acts in kpop who are showing streaming and concert attendance growth like aespa. The industry needs to shake its western reputation of being garbage music for children so BTS and Black Pink going away is a good thing.
