I'm honestly GAGGED with how good DWAS sounded. It's like an ending credit song where the protagonists ride in a car, windows up, traversing through a dissolate, post-apocalyptic wasteland.

this Apple live is taking me back to the earlies days when Gaga was playing with futuristic looks and sounds. it's way more elevated and mature now, but you can still feel that unique DNA she has as an artist beneath it all.

A haunting and heartbreaking film analysis

Gaga confirmed the performance takes place 100 years in the future, inside a ruined version of the opera house from the MAYHEM Ball itself.

That is the reason why the stage appears broken, decayed, and almost abandoned throughout the performance. That detail completely transforms the entire narrative. The shattered stage no longer feels like just an artistic set design.

It becomes a relic. A forgotten monument left behind after an entire era has already faded away. The world that once celebrated MAYHEM is gone, and all that remains are fragments of its memory scattered across a collapsing opera house.

And somewhere within those ruins stands a single stranger from the future, someone born long after Gaga and her little monster's time, discovering the remains of a cultural phenomenon they never actually lived through. Which makes the opening line feel even more heartbreaking:

"Stranger, remember me? — Unknown."

The voice is labeled "Unknown" because, after a century has passed, Gaga herself has become almost mythological. Not fully forgotten, but no longer truly known. Her presence survives only through echoes, stories, music, and ruins left behind inside the opera house. The stranger cannot remember her because they were never there to witness MAYHEM when it was alive.

That is why the project sounds so dystopian and futuristic. The cold synths, industrial atmosphere, emotional distance, and ghost-like production all feel intentional, like signals surviving the collapse of time itself, still echoing through the remains of a once living era.

I think she used them as a way to tie the themes of Catholicism and Requiem Mass together. This is what a quick search says:

While not intrinsically linked, the tetramorph frequently appears in death-related religious contexts, such as on tombs or funeral art, representing the promise of resurrection and the divine authority surrounding Christ in heaven. [1, 2, 3]

Could also be symbolic of her artistic rebirth. It's interesting though that all four creatures are depicted as winged, and she's been using a lot of similar imagery over the past year or so.
