MTV held cultural weight during its heyday and now that is gone. After MTV, we had vevo and YouTube, but that's also being phased out as well. It's significance has become understated without a main distributor to impart its cultural importance. The way we consume media has affected this as well, with shorter attention spans and reels/TikToks being dominant. MV's holds little value nowadays. Aside from being a formality as users stated here already. Another great point from previous posts here is that it costs a lot more nowadays, in addition to YouTube views not being included for chart considerations makes MV production a financial liability. If Artists want to still deliver visuals and killer MVs they would have to be Billionaires in order to front the capital and produce it themselves. Beyonce, Taylor, Gaga and Madonna are great examples. But then again they were already thriving during the 2000's. I'm just grateful that Gaga still somehow puts the work and creative effort to make MVs in today's new landscape. Even though she doesn't release as much singles compared to her previous eras.
