People use grammys as a metric of success but is it even THAT prestigious anymore?  Especially when you factor in the following:

 

- celebs sending flowers and gifts to the grammy committee 

 

- celebs having family members on the committee board

 

- celebs shouting on national television about how someone should have won and the next year the most predictable thing happens 

 

- grammys sabotaging artists bc they did something they were asked not to do and went along w it anyways 

 

The Grammys are lowkey on par with a AMA award lets be real

 

 

 

 

 

Only when your favorite wins one.

Only when your fave is the most awarded artist in the history 

It's never really meant anything!

 

There are so many major and important artists that have never won a single Grammy for their music:

 

David Bowie (whilst he was alive), Diana Ross, Queen, The Beach Boys, Björk, ABBA....

not when beyonce has 35

Grammys are easy to get now, like 1B songs on Spotify. Oscars are the new Grammys because they are more exclusive.

Yeah, otherwise artists (and they fans) wouldn't be going on coke rants every year about them.

David Bowie is shocking. Modern artists today like Katy/Kesha/Demi also deserve but since we all know it's about connections and cozying with the elite, it ain't ****

 

Even crazier when they were called the most racist award show years ago and now those very same people praise them

If sombr sweeps, yes the Grammys gain the credibility back. If he doesn't, Grammys flop and not credible.

Yes, it's still one of very few high prestige music awards you can attain. The artists themselves actually care too. Even when they say they don't and it means nothing like Miley, they're still clearly appreciative and it holds a certain weight regarding your standing in the industry. 

 

Just because it doesn't always reflect what is more popular or culturally present at the moment doesn't make it hold less weight. Grammys award a mix of critical and commercial success and in cases where success and popularity was undeniable, they have awarded those artists.

It used to be the highest recognition for a musician in the past, however, we are all aware the labels are rigging the system by preselecting who's going to win before the event happens. You can always see that there are always 1 artist per label in each category.

Many artists doesn't care anymore about it, so is the public.

I imagine that it, like all awards, means more to the person receiving it than it ever will to us. I don't begrudge an artist who considers it important to them. Whether or not we assign importance to it, it is without question the most prestigious award in the music business and as such is very meaningful to those who're fortunate enough to receive it. 

People stopped taking the Grammys seriously after snubbing the Weeknd, it was the last straw IMO

They're still prestigious. I mean Beyoncé won a couple and the internet had a meltdown. But in general, award shows are less relevant than they were 10 years ago. They struggle to connect with younger audiences.

 

But in response to other points in this thread, the Grammys are one of the hardest award shows to 'buy'. There are 13,000 voting members, and each member can only vote in a certain set of categories. Artists and labels definitely campaign for them, but most of that is done publicly through set piece performances, press releases etc.

They were absolutely cruel and nasty towards Nicki. But she doesn't need that anyways, her 100million+ grossing WW tour says it all. However, dismissing their elitist and abusive actions is a choice.

They are a form of recognition. Winning a Grammy, especially now, means that your peers decided that you produced an exemplary piece of work. There are plenty of talented artists who haven't received that recognition but I think it means something, especially to an artist, to be recognized by their peers. They can be part of a package of a fantastic body of work but they don't have to be.

Growing up the Grammys had a bad reputation of having no actual value or artistic merit. They did their job on remarketing themselves by awarding artists with large online following so they have regained good reputation these days. But I see through them and their schemes. They award the status quo, the people playing into respectability. They are of no worth to me

I'm not saying I agree with the Grammys but Shape of You was quite literally the biggest song of all time 

All award shows aside from The Academy Awards which still holds a certain level of prestige, just seem like relics at this point.  With ever declining ratings for these shows it seems like who can we give these awards to for ratings more than the actual art.
