As a representative of three unique things occurring in the Obama half of the 2010s — social media making superstars instead of labels (also applies Biebs), 2010s British Invasion (1D, Wanted, Jessie J, Ellie Goulding, Cher Lloyd, Olly Murs, Ed Sheeran, Emeli Sande, Florence, Calvin, Sam Smith, Mumford etc) and the overall teen pop scene (Bieber, Wanted, Ex-Acts Trio, Austin Mahone, 5H, Little Mix, Hunter Hayes, Hot Chelle Rae, Ariana, Bridget Mendler etc) — One Direction are the perfect representation for all of those things.
