You people in here are totally out of line. Just totally despicable. There is not a single person in this thread who cares about the genocide and systemic murder of innocent people, you'd rather use that tragedy as fodder in a stan war. These gleeful posts like the ones below by @KatyPrismSpirit and @Pop exist because they find the dead bodies of women and children to be a useful tool in their online war against the fans of a rich American woman. The Israeli government loves that you are spending your time on this rather than confronting their behavior. Stan wars are fun, that's why we're here, but have a sense of shame. And let's be clear. This thread shouldn't exist to boost Lady Gaga's bona fides. The OP is actually pretty respectful and neutral, but the fact that the replies instantly devolve into LMs using this as proof that she is progressive is totally ridiculous and disrespectful as well. The right thing is for this thread to be closed, and for any thread about popstars and their relationship with Palestine to be closed as well, unless it's legitimate news.

Yeah the solo version is better but it needed something to give it a push as a post release single, the video itself wasn't enough, it needed something that would bring fresh eyes to it. A different collaborator probably would have helped it age better though.

The thing about Miley that makes her hard to quantify though is that her Hannah Montana discography is also huge. The first two soundtracks are 4 million+ sellers + the movie soundtrack is 2x platinum and the various other live albums and subsequent soundtracks collected a couple million more units. She was already an established pop star in effect by the time she started her career as Miley in earnest. What was so notable about Bangerz and catapulted her to a new level of celebrity is that she proved she was a viable popstar outside of Disney and with a different sound and image. I think it's hard to quantify and compare her to popstars like Rihanna/Gaga/Bey as well as "ex-acts" like Ariana because her career looks like both of those paths and neither at the same time. She is definitely a big star though with a notable musical legacy, just one prone to large flops in the middle of the hits.

This thread and whole thing are totally boring and reek of insecurity. It's nice that Katy Perry got this random resurgence of a hit after all these years and it's certainly good for her career but there is no one on Earth who would choose to be Katy Perry over Lady Gaga rn. Katy herself would kill to release a song as successful as Abracadabra right now. Katy has received these little bleeps that show she isn't totally over but despite any and all goodwill her past work produced she can't make people interested in her right now to save her life. The creative language of "song from an album this decade" about a song that literally wasn't released this decade is proof in itself that everything about this argument relies on creative phrases designed to win on a technicality.

Inspired by this thread about Justin Bieber's Baby, what are some big hit songs that were regarded as "bad" at the time they were big, despite the fact they were smashing? Baby is a great example. Despite breaking the record for most disliked video on YouTube, the song peaked at 5 in the US and sold 4 million copies before its later reappraisal. Work by Rihanna is another great example. It spent 9 weeks at #1 and ended up #4 on the year end chart. Despite this, stans and critics at the time critiqued its choice as a single and the popular notion at the time was that the repetition in the chorus was ridiculous and was highly mocked.

Maybe next week, there are no major releases today except for that post malone mixtape. If it can maintain similar numbers with a full week of elevated streams it could get to #1.

Yeah I think a part of this is genuinely just that her music isn't well suited for summer, I'd imagine she sees a boost in the fall where it is more appropriate. Lots of artists with more varied discographies have this pattern as well. Ie. Shallow and AWRUTW do much better and rise to her top 5 during the fall and winter but have fallen to her lower top ten in the summer.

Yeah it really is a shame. It's such a great concept and I am grateful that artists at that caliber and with that level of resources went for something so bonkers. Still, I think you can tell that it really bothered Todd how much the alt right hooked onto the first one and desperately wanted to poke a hole in that, at the expense of the story ultimately.

"The offers have stopped" and mentioning her cameo in one of the biggest blockbusters of the year in the same sentence lol. I mean it really is a testament to her demand that they brought her in for a totally unnecessary cameo because of how much the industry loves her. Anyways, it is simply and demonstrably untrue from both a commercial and critical perspective that ASIB is her only successful role. The $12m paycheck for Joker demonstrates her status in the industry and her string of cameo appearances demonstrates her continued demand. I don't think Katy would have much success in film though, SA apologia is even more toxic in the film industry after the Weinstein saga and it's not like she has any residual star power to make the risk worth it.

For all the drama here, Choosin' Texas is a legitimately great song. Even though the Hot 100 and current popular music is dire rn I'm happy to see this song succeed so much.

I know you don't have much knowledge about the film industry because of the whole Katy Perry stan thing but yeah. You're delusional if you don't think the average director wouldn't kill to get Gaga, and subsequently all of the attention she draws, into their next picture.

I mean not really. She's done movies pretty sparingly anyways (only three non-cameo roles over almost 10 years) and she did an album rollout and world tour directly after Joker so it's not like she's had much time to select and film something. The movie industry isn't like music where one flop can completely derail a career. She's a known entity in the business and a box office draw, she has her choice of parts whenever she wants them.

No, ceiling is prob about 5k. Itunes sales are dead and US is by far the biggest market. 100k would put it within the top 10 biggest selling hits of the year... which obviously it isn't.

Now how that chart works. It's a point system based on country and position. No actual sales are calculated into the chart. It's quite easy for a song to get high on that chart without actually selling much if 1 or 2 sales are leveraged strategically in smaller countries. I have no understanding of her decision making other than the fact that she has collabed with way more artists on her last album than any of her peers (Gaga 2/14, Rihanna 2/13, Kesha 0/11, Beyoncé 7/27), I can't imagine she did that if she didn't have an intention for them
