Their albums before those were from the physical era. Basically no physical cd was reaching gold or platinum on that format in the US. Physical singles were still strong in Europe and Oceania though.

Chat GPT lied to me! 

Madonna's was kind of in 1984, Gold certifications (for singles only, not albums) was for 1 million copies sold. But when single sales started decreasing, they lowered the standard in 1989. 

 

But 1 million copies for albums has always been platinum. Not sure why that dumb rule was in place for singles prior to 1989, and they didn't even automatically make the gold singles platinum. 

 

EDIT: I'm pretty sure the Angel/Into The Groove 12" single was certified Platinum in 1985.

Crazy in Love was the first ever Digital Songs chart #1 back in 2003... with 1.4k downloads sold in its tracking week.

Because single sales were dead between 2001 and 2005

 

The first song to sell 1 million digital sales was Hollaback Girl by the end of 2005

the disrespect & discrediting of selena gomez by punch of ******* needs to be studied atp.

Hollywood Records was so disrespectful for taking more than a decade to buy a RIAA certification for them.

You forget that you have to apply to the RIAA (and send payment) for them to certify.

 

This just tells me that Mathew was holding those purse strings tight, and the aftermath of "Irreplaceable" was when he finally felt comfortable enough to make the call to Columbia and give 40K-60K of Beyonce's overall label budget to RIAA for a full audit (RIAA member companies: $350 per certification).

No uncomfortableness over here.
