TB: Madonna on lip syncing

Featured Replies

Overall, I'm against lip syncing but Madonna raise some valid points too. Whether to sing live or not depends on the performance the artist is going to give.

I think a lot of people do too much about lip syncing when it is actually an art form and Madonna's lip sync moments are always worth it.

Lipsynch is fine when a. The majority of the show is live b. You offer choreography and set pieces and c. It's actually mindful and tastefully done and not sticking on the 1999 CD for the entire show, no shade.

My god I love how eloquent she is and her speaking voice so much.
She enunciates perfectly.

i never really cared if an artist lipsyncs much. most artists that i like have a ~vibes~ performance style/weak vocal ability so it doesn't really matter for me…however miss tinashe can sing and dance live but we know she runs circles around most people no shade

I hate that Mariah is lip-synching now.

Singers have to sing live bar some occasions (like a tv special where there can be technical issues.) In my country, there are terrific singers who sing the entirety of their shows live and not an off-key note is to be heard.

I don't think there should be an excuse apart from health concerns that come unexpectedly like throat infections.

Ironic how people are praising Madonna here for being eloquent and compare her to current pop stars. I wonder what people who grew up in the eras of Elvis or Aretha Franklin had to say about the ones like Madonna that came up during the MTV era.

Im sorry but saying this about the most successful woman in this industry is laughable

Pop stars today are so bland personality wise. I doubt they would even answer this as honestly.

Modern pop stars wouldn't just not answer this, they would have the questions screened prior and make sure it's not even asked

They would blame stans online for the rumors and complain that artists shouldn't be expected to do anything. :cm:

Oh girl, let's not :giraffe: You're really has some nerve, since even your beloved fav is lip syncing some parts and using double tracks in her tours:gaycat2: and there's nothing to be ashamed of, especially when you have around 80 shows with extreme dancing, theatrics etc, you simply can lose your voice with 100% live :coffee2:

Everyone lips or relies on tracked vocals. Katy and Gaga have a lot of vocals coming from tracks on their current tours which they then sing over.

Im sure Bey is doing the same ? Dua certainly has the same set up. It is impossible to sing every word live during a 2 hour show.

This is a little misleading, and Im not sure why she isn't more proud of herself for mostly doing fully live shows and making that clear.

except for a handful of songs (which are semi live). Especially in those days, she really sang most of the music live. This video gives the impression she's another Paula Abdul

If you're going to lip-sync, own up to it and do it for a reason like her. Some others hide behind "omg I'm so good, they thought I wasn't singing", girl no, you were not :deadbanana4:

Oh wow was Mariah responding to Madonna here ? ( like much later )

She mentions videos V live shows.

Yup and people do not go to a Madonna show for her vocals, she gives so much more and in the end you end up hearing 90% of her live vocals so hooray to her

I mean, if someone serves an entertaining show with different dance routines or even theatrical , it's fine by me to have lipsync included since it can be very demanding to do those while also singing live if you have to do 2h of shows every day almost

I find it criminal to do lipsync when an artist does nothing on stage but is mostly static and just sings.

this. if you're giving an entertaining performance, i'm fine with lipsyncing.

but i'd say this using my own fave as a example. I like Avril because she sings live (and does almost nothing on stage), if she dares to lipsyinc what else can she gives to us?

This video and that other one where she defends the art of music videos from Hall & Oats (I think) truly give "QUEEN OF POP" and she is! :jonnycat:

Music videos aren't relevant like they used to be. Gen Z doesn't care about top notch vocals but they still want the artists to sing live.

just to flex that to ther fanbases in twitter fights. In reality, she care more about the visuals, choreos and the song to be good.

He's right tho. They are first and foremost singers and you can't complain about people wanting singers to be able to sing.

The irony of you saying this with her in your avatar. LOL

irony? do you even know what irony means? i have an acclaimed vocalist on my profile picture.

She's not a good singer even back then. Shrill and poorly phrased. Its performance much like Madonna that makes her an icon.

But it doesn't apply to Madonna, oh at all.  Madonna is a singer who does sing live in her shows, except for some selected numbers where dancing is the main focus so what even is the point of bringing up that take in a thread that is about Madonna talking about the few selected numbers where she is lip syncing because the main focus are her dance moves?

Madonna never promoted herself as a vocalist, she was always a performer first and foremost. People were well aware of that and they were free to not buy tickets to her shows, as was mentioned in the interview. On the other hand, there are certain people who actively promote themselves as vocalists who perform with a heavy backing track which they often audibly allow to take over for like 50% of the show. At least Madonna only lipsynched a couple of songs.

I honestly think her shows started a slippery slope. Yes she treats touring as an art form but the popularisation of concept pop tours lowered the expectations on how a performer should perform. Yes you can do cartwheels on stage but can you carry a song live without holding the mic at the crowd every other word?

It's because of her aura and intellect, the ability to wax poetic about subjects that she's interested in. She's captivating, even when she's off the mark on a particular subject. I could watch Madonna interviews all day, especially from the 80s and 90s.

though the subject matter here is a bit ironic given when this interview was taped (circa 1990, not 1984), that she was still mostly singing live lol.
