Well, I agree but even as a casual listener, I knew what this album was about. If the goal was just to have him listen to it and record his reaction / thoughts, I'm fine with it but that doesn't make him a critic, that makes him a guy with a reaction channel. And he clearly aspires to be so much more so that's where he failed imo.

Isn't it his job (as the greatest critic of all time) to understand an album's background before he reviews it? If tomorrow I review an album in Chinese and say that the lyrics don't make any sense (because I don't speak it), will you also be forgiving and say, "Oh, but he doesn't speak Chinese, how could he know etc"? If you don't know much about something you're supposed to be a critic of, you shouldn't review it in the first place.

To those who say they don't know anyone except Fantano, that's on you, not on other music critics. And if we ignore countless examples of people publishing acclaimed books and magazine pieces, not recording Youtube videos with a dumb expression clickbait thumbnail, what about Peter Robinson, the PopJustice guy? During his time he helped launched several popstars in the UK and Europe, is partially responsible for Girls Aloud having their mythical status, was the go-to reviewer for Gaga during her BTW phase etc. etc. etc. This guy had published books, newspapers, released music compilations and even had a record label at one point, I think. Most of all, his motto (that pop music does have worth and should be taken seriously) is what grew into poptimism. What is Fantano's main point? "I like this album and do not like that album". Well, cool, but if you don't care about his opinions, that totally makes his "contribution" null and void.
