Doja Cat - "Jealous Type"

I think Demons is an incredible song and video. Probably my favourite Doja video. I'm so glad we got it.

we will find out if the hype really died when vie drops.

Right now it's 2nd most pre-saved on Spotify (behind Taylor), so somebody is interested 😂

It feels like she might promote more this era, and she seems to be having fun.  So I think she'll be OK.  But yeah, the lack of promo and not wanting to be a celebrity caught up with her a bit.  IMO, that's more the issue.  They can't just rely on radio and TikTok.

But she can still recover.  Just don't try it again, after she does come out of this …lol.

It's Top 5 iTunes and Spotify numbers haven't come out for Sunday (prob see more impact on Monday anyways).

we'll see if there was impact today when they drop these numbers

I don't like this song, and her take on 80s is so on the nose aesthetically. Its too kitsch.

It's not modernised at all. It's how Katy Perry would do 80s

I'm a little disappointed the performance didn't do much for the song. It's also one of the least viewed performances on YouTube at the moment :noparty:

The way most of these opinions would be different if this was smashing hhhh yall are so phony

There's actually a lot of good hot takes on this page of the thread

I genuinely think Doja Cat turned off some of her core fans with the Demon era  (lil nas x coded backlash) + the "cash grab" situation + the dumb t-shirt thing.

Jealous Type should be smashing but it's facing the consequences of those and the fact it should have dropped at the beginning of summer (when chart points were low) not the end (now Kpop demon hunters, morgan wallen, sabrina and that alex boy are eating everything up).

The good news is the song and video are good and hopefully that means single 2 can do even better now that people are catching the concept of Vie. She should do more 80s inspired promo and branding (+ brand collabs).

The Spotify numbers for Sunday haven't even come out yet…? lol. Spotify has been delayed like 3-4 days now.

as a stan i have to agree :skull: it def prevented her from building a bigger fanbase

like if sabrina dropped jealous type the song would've been a SMASH hit

jealous type is still her biggest solo debut on spotify despite the lack of playlisting (compared to scarlet era) so there's that…

Being completely honest, I was a big Doja fan in 2020-2022 but I fell off during the Scarlet era after the cash grab comments, dragging her fans, and the sam hyde t-shirt situation. After some time away, I was able to recognize that Doja was going through a lot and just needed to let some steam out. I no longer hold those actions against her, and once the Vie era started, I tapped right back in. She's just way too talented to be written off over minor controversies.

However, the GP doesn't always give artists these second chances... IMO Doja will have to go harder on the promo and fix the narrative around her name if she wants to truly SMASH again long term. I think this era will be about recovery, rebuilding her image, and hopefully ending on a stronger note with the GP.

to make an example from my queen

Scarlet was her Erotica and Vie will be her Bedtime Stories

guess DC6 will be her Ray of Light

I think we also have to take into consideration how drastic the switch was from Planet Her to Scarlet, and again from Scarlet to Vie.

I personally know people who became fan of her during the Scarlet era ('cause they're hip hop fans) and they're now back to "pop? ugh". She had her biggest spotify debut with JT, the hype was there and it's there with the album. But just like Attention, Jealous Type is very different from her previous era, and also very different from her previous pop material. She had success with Say So, and Say So 2.0 when it comes to pure pop tracks. The rest of her hits are R&B/Hip Hop leaning.

The safest choice for her would have been to release a song like Acts of Service as the lead single. But it's clear she/her label made a choice more based on the vibe of the record (which Acts of Service doesn't give, it sounds like the regular Doja smash people eats that appears in every record of hers)

Thissss.  AOS wouldn't have been a good introduction to the sound of the era.  It JUST BARELY makes the cut sonically by having that sample at the beginning lol.

And honestly prob the reason why they're saying "70s and 80s sound" now in their album description.  B/c it prob samples a 70s song…but they knew it was a hit + wanted to include it.

Based on other songs I'm hearing…she has quite a few more choices for singles though.  Thats prob why they didn't budge on putting something new out for VMAs.  They know they'll be fine in the end.

Is it me or is this song mixed weird? I can't even say I know what the melody is or what she is saying, my ear only hears synths and Doja's voice sounds

It's not you, it's Jerk Antonoff.

I like the mix of the demo better…even though it's unfinished.  Because you can hear her voice better + the impacts/accents hit harder with more space in between.

But at the end of the day…the song (melody and lyrics) still the same song…lol.  And that's mostly what GP cares about.

I feel like everyone is doing the mostttt when it comes to number watching and failing to look at the bigger picture when the more important realization is that the music actually sounds better than it ever has been!!

Yes, a lot of people were turned off from Scarlet and misjudged it prematurely based on her antics and overall there were still a few misses, but it's still solid. She just needs to deliver another classic album and she'll be set, and I think this is going to be that album.

Let's not forget she still dropped the biggest album by a female rapper this decadeeee like... the bar for her is so high(.mp3) some of you need to re-adjust expectations a bit because you cannot easily top snatching six (6) multi-platinum hits, a Grammy, and nearly 200 weeks on the albums chart. Especially after the attempted career suicide lol. At the end of the day, the music sounds amazing and you guys see the type of garbage clogging up the top 10 rn right?  We got an album date, we're getting physicals, a tour, and the era has a consistent theme, so it's really a matter of you're tapping in or you're missing out! We can start panicking if the tour doesn't sell and/or if the album sucks, otherwise she'll be fine lol.
