Did Gaga surpass Brit?

Featured Replies

Gaga has been dishing out classics each decade now; scoring a spot on the Janet & MJ table.

Brit used to be called the princess of pop; however! I feel that Gaga has earned her spot as Madonna's heir now. Thoughts?

  • idk but both surpassed xtina.

  • Outselling or outlasting Britney doesn't mean the other becomes "Princess of Pop" or "Madonna's heiress", or else Taylor and Rihanna would be that way before Gaga. The title is very much tied to Britn

  • Duh! All of Brit's peers have surpassed her. She's retired for a reason.

Britney has 5 smash albums

…BOMT

Oops

Britney

In The Zone

Circus

Plus Blackout and Femme Fatale were decent successes with big hits.

Gaga has:

The Fame Monster

Born This Way

that's it? ASIB soundtrack too.

All 5 of those Britney albums are forgotten. Their recurrent sales and streams are horrible. None of them ever charted again after they fell off the BB charts unlike Gaga's albums.

Well then I guess you could say the same about Joanne and Artpop :deadbanana2: little medonsters gonna little medoner :oxygen:

She did with Die With A Smile but to be fair Brit has retired and doesn't care about her career anymore

4 of those have better daily streams than Gaga's 3 latest albums (Chromatica, Joanne, ARTPOP) despite being much older, if those are horrible streams…

Yes and no. In terms of longevity of success absolutely yes, Britney never had a DWAS. But it is hard to surpass the cultural legacy of Britney Spears. Gaga is yet to have songs that are still classics absolutely everyone knows 25 years later like BOMT, Oops and Toxic. Even young gen z and gen alpha know these songs. It remains to be seen if Gaga's hits will retain that relevancy though I feel Poker Face & Bad Romance are on their way.

Bad Romance and Poker Face already stood the test of time? They are almost 20 year old songs atp

Yes and no, because despite having more "longevity," Gaga's solo work is nowhere near as successful.

She only achieves big hits with collaborations, like Selena Gomez.

Her last real successful studio album was BTW, just 3 years into her career.

Spoken like the average pop stan stuck in 2010s. Gaga is nearly 20 years into her career and those are still very huge songs.

They have another 11 years though before they are as old as BOMT is now. That's a ******* long time, will they continue to hold space () until 2035? Britney's biggest hits continue to be relevant even after she has completely evaporated from the music industry, with no tours or recurrent performances etc to help her. Again it feels a bit premature to suggest that Gaga has fully surpassed her in every aspect when that's what Britneys legacy is

If BL and Ff are included then why not include Joanne and Chromatica :thing:

They are cemented in pop culture already. Shallow, DWAS and ARUTW also are big staple ballads that show no signs of fading. We don't need to wait another decade to say that Gaga has classic songs.

They keep bringing up more sales or numbers but refusing to respond to this :coffee2:

In every metric except for album sales and tabloid relevancy. The thing is, at Britney's peak those were the only things that mattered.

Now it's touring and hits which Gaga has fared much better with both.

Gaga has been bigger than Britney every single day since 2010 but on the overall career scale it's impossible to compare. Britney also never was #2 or #3 to other pop girls like Gaga has been pretty consistently after Born This Way. Britney was the top name in the industry from 98-03 and was able to ride that wave up until now. Britney's fall off can be attributed entirely to personal issues, the entire time she was stable and in control she was the top dog. Gaga had 2009(10?)-11 at her absolute peak and was not able to recapture it ever again. Gaga consistently scores a smash hit every few years thougn and she's more than 15 years in. Not everybody can sell out stadiums either, it takes a degree of talent that Britney frankly isn't able to deliver outside of highly rehearsed short performances. Ultimately though they both had super frontloaded careers and neither is ever touching Madonna. Nobody is.

I think the only reasonable answer is that Britney is bigger for older people and Gaga is bigger for my generation. :gaycatney3:

Sure they can go under successes but that still doesn't change that Britney has more smash albums
