Investor-backed hyper growth isn't exactly a gotcha in any industry since it's proven to be viable 10000 times once reaching critical mass but there is some truth to the idea that things are less paid for than they were.

there was a time a few years back when it seemed like kpop was actually heading to a direction where the genre would grow and evolve to survive and rival the us pop market, at least when it comes to the quality of its pop music and concepts... but instead it's been slowing down and I know these companies are wondering what's happening when it's all their fault lol 

 

the absurd beauty standards, the lack of concern over their idols overall health, the career ending "scandals" for **** that happened when they were kids, the pressure to be perfect and not show any kind of personality whatsoever, limited artistic input or incentive, robotic live performances without live vocals, no spontaneity... like wow, how shocking that they are unable to break into the us market or anywhere else where these things are seem as cruel and inhumane. 

 

now that the US have new pop girls shining again with good music, talent and personality, and the old superstars like Taylor, Beyoncé and Gaga are still going strong, there's no way it's gonna thrive again, unlike the times when pop was kinda dead and rappers were stomping on everyone else and kpop was a good option for those missing some fun pop music with choreo and nice videos.

 

anyways, all of this to say that this NJZ thing was actually a good way to change kpop for the better and start a new chapter, maybe repeaking again at some point this decade, but it's clear that the thing the Korean music industry cares most about is having control over kids and not let them any kind of rights so they can do whatever they want with them behind closed doors.

 

it's sad, but they will pay for it in the long run. 

 

wow thank you!! you quite literally articulated all of my thoughts way better than i would. i agree with everything you said. and yea the korean pop music market had a huge chance at competing with the US at some point but they fumbled because of everything you say and i feel like even in korea, american / western pop music is becoming bigger and bigger. like why does gaga have die with a smile at #9 and abracadabra at #41 and rising right now??  + kendrick, sza smashing…

 

anyway, it's sad because i have a lot of people around me who are preparing to enter the entertainment industry and it's basically the global opinion that kpop's system needs to drastically change or else it will basically collapse. but then all of my entertainment friends are art majors and a lot of the old men in charge are business or economics majors and don't care about the art at all  literally bling NOT the music

You hit the nail on the head with most of this but I still think if another generational talent like a GD or a IU or a Taeyeon shows up and gets the right support that they will become a global superstar. People being even peripherally aware of Korean music because of previous gens won't go away.

 

US media hegemony will always live on and it can take years or even decades between true general public global crossovers from other established markets(Swedish pop, British TV, Japanese animation, Latin pop, etc) but when they happen they inherit the legacy of their predecessors and skip being associated with all the failed attempts in between.

 

Look at how much NewJeans was able to accomplish as if the 3rd generation whale pandering never happened in such a short time. They immediately picked up where 2nd gen left off with getting normal pop music listeners into Korean music.

 

YG was an underfunded laundering front when GD debuted and they're still riding that wave 19 years later. The next Megastar probably won't come from HYBE, SM, YG, or JYP but they still have a route as long as SM or HYBE doesn't acquire them first.

i have a LOT of thoughts and i probably won't be able to articulate them well and i probably will forget a lot of things too. i don't know when exactly it happened, maybe it started with produce 101 then worsened with covid, but the kpop industry has reached a level of parasocialism that is so TOXIC not only to the singers but also to the public. it's NOT normal to basically SELL 15 year old kids like that and no one bats an eye. the constant fansigns, the constant phone calls, the constant forced messaging on apps… a lot of people here sided with that guy from riize but don't realize that the reason he's not needed anymore in the group is because they're not selling music, but subscriptions to those messenger apps, phone calls etc… and the average kpop fans have been so conditioned that someone with a girlfriend has absolutely no value. music has become the least important product. eras are wrapped in under just a few days so they can go on to having multiple fansigns a day where idols are exhausted but have to pretend to have a relationship with fans they're seeing for the 5th time in the same week. some theboyz members (i believe?) were literally being dragged and abused by fans on twitter a few days ago because they were taking long breaks during fansigns lmao??

the constant objectification of idols is off putting. i don't remember if it got reported but min heejin and newjeans actually mentioned briefly how they were against that but hybe forced them to do it (if i remember well).

 

i know kpop has always been superficial, but it has reached entirely new levels these past few years. just watch performances from a decade ago and you'll realize how fun and entertaining they were compared to today. nowadays idols have to be absolutely perfect on stage so weirdos can watch 4K fancams on loop. and a decade ago the industry was still relatively young and immature so it can be somewhat excused.

 

now on to how absolutely none of them have any control whatsoever. or at least the majority of them. they're basically slaves at this point and anyone who isn't blind can see that. mind you were're talking about the only proper pop scene in korea!! it's so sad that it's either that, or actual artists who only do basic ballads and have 0 budget. the only one that is inbetween is maybe IU but she's been doing this for so long her pop sound became washed and boring and i say this as an ex stan 

 

i have so much faith in maybe people like jennie who can possibly transcend and become a proper pop star. there's genuinely no pop star in korea atm and you can truly feel it. it's either indie ballad singers or underage slaves who are so repressed that they can't even show their true personality 

 

i'm not very familiar with the japanese market but from what i've seen, outside of idols they actually have a healthy industry of pop artists?? japanese pop music actually gained so much popularity in korea this past year, which is not surprising.
