The pre-00s popgirls daily YouTube streams have her at barely 140k streams for her entire catalogue I-  pretty sure Spotify follows similar trends but WHY is this?

 

Was the nipplegate incident that big of a dealbreaker? She was such a commercial force in the 80s-90s and to just all of a sudden literally dip from existence in public consciousness, Madonna rakes like 2M daily along with Whitney, Mariah and Celine... But Janet is literally a nonfactor today. Why is this?

Out of all MPG her songs weren't remembered at all! but I don't think shes forgotten on atrl though. 

Her discography, sans TVR, aged the worst out of all the ladies mentioned in OP. 

Her sound is extremely dated. Only together again sounds fresh.

But you just remembered her. How about this. What made you remember Janet Jackson enough to make this thread?

last time she being active on music scene is also first time i recognized j.cole and he has continued to release music, peaked, and stabilize on droplet era atm.

 

almost a decade while her documentary was good one week nostalgia. her low social media engagement is concerned either. 

It has to be that she lacks one big signature hit that is globally recognized. Even less successful acts than her from the 80s and 90s have one that carry their overall streaming stats to this day. Though I am only assuming.

It’s her personality tbh.  She hates fame and is very reclusive.  Not many quiet and private people become superstars or can maintain that level of fame.  You need to really want it and be willing to do anything for it, like Madonna, Britney, Bey, Gaga, Taylor, etc.  Janet always seemed like the type of person who was given an incredible opportunity that she never really wanted for herself, but felt like the opportunity was too good to pass up.  I feel like she would have preferred to go to college and have a normal career if she wasn’t born into her family.

her team has mismanaged her youtube channel her entire career. i think that has really ruined her streaming power (the same goes for madonna but at least her team fixed it by late 10s)

Being artistically checked out for 20 years and using the same producers for 40 is not the tea. Her contributions to music at her peak are stellar and not to be ignored, and she is legend whether or not you know or care.

She got overshadowed by her brother, and her impact is mostly felt in the black community and specifically among gay black men, but her legacy never seemed to carry over into a more broad appreciation for her music. Tbh she had a crazy amount of impact though. Britney was basically a white Janet in terms of her performance style, and even the whole good girl->sexual woman element present in a ton of pop star’s images today was done by Janet first.

I find her voice offensive. Maybe many people feel the same. 

OP has been on ATRL for the past 5 years now to know that Janet's youtube channel has been disorganised for well over a decade now and yet contirbutes to this almost yearly threads made about her poor youtube streaming numbers.

 

Her biggest hit Together Again is not even available worldwide (check kworb yourself) and is still remains blocked for well over a decade. Her other big hits during the 90s only got unblocked in 2019 and 2021 and there are still quite a number of videos that remains missing/blocked worldwide with no signs of her team fixing it. All this contributes to her low daily youtube streams.

 

Her Spotify numbers have improved slightly and often increases whenever she's active in the public eye with new music or TV appearances.

Contrary to what white ATRL gays want you to believe, her music didn’t age bad at all, it just didn’t age well for the streaming era and the music landscape today. Janet peaked very early in her career artistically with Rhythm Nation which is a sonically abrasive album that doesn’t really translate well to what the streaming audience wants.

 

The streaming audience wants songs that have these universally appealing ‘cool’ lyrics or carefree party songs. (see Material Girl or Girls Just Wanna Have Fun). Combine that with the legacy erasure after the Super Bowl, the only one album in the 2010s and her pretty much not appearing in the spotlights anymore due to being a mother, it makes sense why she doesn’t have the recurring stats of her peers. But Janet is not forgotten. She’s still a legend in the black community and her legacy will always stay in tact.

Racism, sexism and lacking a true global classic are all to blame. 
 

however, as others have said, Janet’s impact goes far beyond whether she is relevant today. The legacy of her image, style, themes, and music can still be seen today. And she has four of the greatest albums ever made in her catalogue. So there’s that 

Forgotten? Where? 

Her Youtube streams are low because tons of her music videos are missing or are blocked. If you look at her Spotify stats they're much better because everything is available. It also doesn't help that she's barely active on social media and hasn't released music in 4 years (and counting).

Madonna's voodoo I think. She accused Madonna for having no class (which was weird because they have similar filmography) yet her career collpased because she showed her **** on stage.

Then why so many rock songs above 1b on Spotify that aren't any of that from the 80s, 90s and even 70s? And some of them longer than 6 minutes? 

 

Janet just needs something big to remind people how great she is. Streaming has songs for every taste and not just meme songs.

Catalogue streams are all about viral phenomena, competent team, self-promotion and/or media support...

 

Janet is lacking in all departments unfortunately.

I think this can be discussed in a way that's not shady & that respects her legacy and impact. It definitely is true that she is a bit forgotten by the GP considering how big she once was.

I think it's that she doesn't have a massive classic hit propping up her catalogue, like a lot of acts from her era do, including ones with smaller careers than her.

 

She was famous for being a great performer, having good albums, having lots of moderate hits. Not for one classic. And that hurts her ongoing relevance
