as a casual Mariah fan and big Taylor fan, I think there's something very different with both. Taylor loves dealing with intricacies, how this one thing made person in song feel, what they did, where they did it, very detailed, autobiographic lyrics. Recently though, she uses more question and answer or dialogue type of lyricism, all to emphasize the sonic and overall narrative in every song. RED, Folklore, Evermore are biggest examples of this. Mariah I think writes with the intention of knowing where her vocals align, this is especially clear with the Butterfly album. Mariah prefers to definitely use more first person type lyricism, because at the end of the day all her songs are basically about her, Taylor used to do this but stopped with her 2020 releases. Mariah prefers vague descriptors, winds, dim lights, hands touching, very balladeer type of writing, the vocals always take center stage with a descriptive song close behind. Taylor tends to be more diary-to-song type of songwriter. Overall, Taylor requires me to actively visualize the sonic field she's conveying, hyper detailed and she shines in this with her ballads whilst Mariah's very sparse instrumentation, vocal layering and vague lyricism all add to her soundscape, her voice (in her prime) make me feel what the lyrics are trying to convey.

Honestly I think we're beyond the misogyny narrative. Its almost completely racially driven at this point. A lot of the online discourse around Taylor Swift in 2024 is almost always put in juxtaposition with women like Beyonce, sad to say. Its racially driven more than gender driven. No her songwriting is mid! It can't be. She can't sing amazingly like Bey or dance as well as Janet! Its unfounded hate from a community that has been historically disparaged by the capitalist society we live in. Do I agree that the black community is constantly being hurt by systemic structures? Yes. Do I think the music industry has biases against black artists, specifically black women? Yes. Do I think Taylor Swift has benefited from white privilege? For sure. But is Taylor Swift the epitome of the sins of the industry and peak white mediocrity? Absof*ckinlutely not. Taylor is being used as a monolith for all the grievances the black community has towards the industry and I'm sick of it. And in the process, some users online become so emboldened to spout racist rhetoric especially towards Asians. Even here on ATRL, I've seen so many 'white worshipping Asians' comment in response to threads about Asia loving Taylor its insane and the mods just let them get out scot free. It speaks really to how divided and how echo chambery the online space is now.

If the main concern is radio we're all forgetting Ariana Grande's still on the horizon and if anyone has taken the torch of Rihanna's dominance on Top 40/HAC/Rhythmic radio its her. Sure yes, and? was a big tank but honestly another great album drop single and she'll be back to pure form in no time. What this means is essentially is that while Bey might rise further and further on radio, Ariana who is releasing 2-3 weeks prior will probably take the spins and audience from her in no time. THE may be a multiformat song rn but there's no indicator its headed for #1 on any of it while Ariana is guaranteed to crack #1 on Pop with ease if the song is good. By the time Taylor returns, the rest of the radio audience is free to cling to new Taylor music. April beyond is Taylor's for the taking.
