i wonder what happened. Mariah's label must've been gearing up to release a cd single and they would've used the same tactic of releasing it as an airplay only single, then releasing the cd single a month after for a #1 debut.

-> Ariana Grande is the only artist in history to have all her lead singles debuting in the top 10 region, covering her six studio albums so far. This is particularly impressive since it not only requires the artist to achieve instant success from the get-go (something only Olivia Rodrigo has managed to capture since), but also cultivate consistent interest and longevity. Ariana also benefitted from a frequent release schedule and having streaming to her advantage, of course, but it's huge nonetheless.

Yeah back then singles were out for almost all songs but sometimes they withheld to boost sales. there was a rumor that Janet did it for State of the world so that she wouldn't break her brother's 7 top 10s/5s record.

Well, it was more than the song. It was the culmination of so many hits from the album that year (and Opposites Attract was just released in November 1989 too). I believe the fact that she had 5 back-to-back smashes that year was just convincing people to just buy the album.
