With Joker it's worth noting not only is it arguably the most talked about movie of the last decade (divisive mass critical and pop culture attention, the second most watched movie on Letterboxd, #78 on IMDB 250, most nominated movie at the 2020 Academy Awards) it's truly a global box office smash; it's currently in the Top 40 highest grossing movies of all time, but take away the US and China it jumps into the Top 15.

 

Basically, at this point there is no reason to doubt the movie will make bank (FAD is likely to grow domestically with a bigger opening and a month to itself next October while nothing suggests a significant drop internationally to counter that), especially as they are doing The Dark Knight playbook of bringing in an exciting and iconic (ie easily marketable) comic book counterpart, a dynamic that will be given an intense psychothriller lens that we haven't seen done justice on screen yet. People are going to eat it up; especially if it gets a similar rollout to before as Joker's early reception at Venice was really an arrival moment.

 

Yes the "musical" label is making people hesitant whether it will limit box office appeal, but this movie depends on taking big swings that ruffles feathers especially when the first thrived on controversy including its cinematic homages. Honestly it's just hard at this stage to say that FAD dropping much, if at all, from the original gross feels like the most likely outcome.

Theoretically, an underperformance is possible, but I have a hard time seeing it flop. The reported budget is 150M. If we use a 2.5 multiplier to find a rough breakeven point, it'd need to make 375M worldwide. It going south of 400M just feels like a stretch atp. Even The Flash, which had everything going against it (complete audience disinterest, a controversial and unmarketable star, weak audience reactions, etc.), should end up nearing 300M ww. 

 

I think it's much more likely that J:FáD pulls a Wakanda Forever (relative underperformance that's still a hit following a huge breakout original) than for it to be an outright flop.

Yep, I agree. We have zero reason to doubt this project's success. It is honestly the one of the few sure-fire things throughout Gaga's career. This is going to be big. I think some fans are ignoring the draw of Gaga. Her name and inclusion in this alone is going to push it very hard.
