Also, did anyone notice her last IG post ie the slideshow of her trip? I couldve sworn it never appeared on my feed. I only knew she posted something when I went to her page. Self titled was so bloated and rushed, I'm curious to hear your retrospective dream tracklist there since it makes sense to just delegate some tracks to the movie OSTs. Honestly there is no album #2 for me without Fly though, so that'd be a tough one to lose. 

I agree that Mr. James Dean is by far the superior song! I am also not a fan of I Am, that's maybe the worst thing Dianne Warren ever wrote.

 

I agree self titled felt bloated although I loved how many songs it had when I was a kid. I'm not a fan of how it pulled double duty as her second album and Raise Your Voice soundtrack at all. Fly, Shine, Jericho and SWOM are all borderline c*ristian rock song. Fly fits sonically thanks to the Evanescence lite production but the other 3 are trying too hard to lighten up a pretty dark album. Fly is really the best lead single contender tho, I was letting my love of Crash World cloud that.

She didn't write it herself and it's not a well written song but it was always pretty obvious to me that song was about her relationship with Joel for her. A lot of the songs on the album refer to that relationship. DtK is about being a "squeaky clean" teen pop star having to hide the realities of the relationship she's in to protect her public image. It's way deeper than anyone gives it credit for but it was kind of dumbed down and generalized for young teens to relate to more. Dangerous to Know and Cry, the misunderstood masterpieces you are.

Happy 23rd birthday to the RIAA Gold-Certified Santa Claus Lane 🎅 as much as I don't like how it's sometimes referred to as her "debut", it's nice revisiting this every year as there's definitely nostalgia associated with it. 

 

Also, I think that Movie Surfers performance of SCL on Disney Channel was her first televised performance ever? She ate that

Same! I know she's shared a bit about rejection/losing roles in the acting world, so I do wonder if passing up a hit song like SUBG could be a similar feeling to that. It would be cool to hear her take regardless.

I like this interpretation! I can definitely see it being about her navigating her image and relationship with the public, having to lie, etc. since this was around the early Joel days. 

 

It'd be cool to hear her modern take on this subject with her own lyrics tbh. Like how it was growing up being labeled as a "role model" and adults telling her to never ever change. Omg maybe that's what "You're So Mature" is about?

Charli is a big fan of Hilary music and was disappointed when her team rejected boom boom clap for her 2014 comeback

 

its why she kept the song for herself

I just want to chime in on Dangerous to Know - such a weirdly written song especially the chorus, but oh the melody and how angsty it is, I just love how good and bad it is at the same time.

 

We have to give Underneath This Smile and Hide Away their flowers too. Sooo underrated but beautiful vulnerable tracks!

As Joel Madden has his own podcast, I would love to see Hilary sit down with him and discuss obviously her new music, but also have some insight behind the creations of Wake Up, Beat of My Heart, and Break My Heart. Joel created a new soundscape for Hilary that continued her musical success after the "under-performance" of the self-titled era, and I'd really love to know how the above songs came to fruition.

Do we know if they made any unreleased songs? Imagine if we got a full length album with that 80s inspired pop punk feel.l instead of a compilation. Break My Heart is SO Good Charlotte coded.

 

Although it does make the success of Most Wanted that much more impressive. I remember being so proud as a fan when it went #1 and STAYED there a 2nd week.

I wonder if Joel was ever involved in the very early stages of Dignity's writing and recording process? Surely Hollywood Records would have approached him and Benji given the warm reception Wake Up/Most Wanted received from fans and the general public.

There was a wonderful insider on Hilaryfan back in the day who revealed there were leftover songs from Most Wanted, but I cannot recall why they didn't appear on the release. 

Self-Titled is far from perfect, but I still really enjoy it.

 

Also, the Crash World stanning  why wasn't it on ST?! One of my favorite Hilary songs

Now You Know deserved to make the album tracklisting for self-titled as well.  
Hopefully Urban Outfitters will press the A Cinderella Story original soundtrack in the near future.

same. either that or miss gurl is just being a housewife this week and said no to work stuff.

Hopefully this weekend is the start of the new era because I feel like the momentum is a bit fading now, her streaming numbers (still poor) are a bit decreasing so we need a boost.
