I feel like every time she won AOTY it coincided with her year being significant for where pop culture was at that given time. So all of them.

You could argue Midnights was a bit more carried by all things Taylor than the album alone, but the album's still amazing so i think its deserved!

Anyone trying to discredit Midnights has clearly not listened to the album. It's perfection from start to finish.

Maroon, Lavender Haze, Anti Hero, Snow on the Beach, Sweet Nothing, You're on your own kid, Labyrinth, Would've Could've Should've, High Infidelity, Dear Reader, and so many more are literally pop perfection.

Not to mention the album DEFINED the year. No other album deserved it more than Midnights. It truly was the album of that year.

Folklore is not the defining sound of the 2020s, barely anyone was/is recreating that sound which wasn't even original in the first place Future Nostalgia and After Hours had way more impact sound wise.

And SOS is more acclaimed than Midnights.

Fearless, 1989, and Folklore made sense objectively. I would've given The Fame AOTY over Fearless but that is very biased lol. Fearless DESERVED it.

Midnights' level of acclaim was absolutely ridiculous, though, and I will die on that hill. SOS was absolutely robbed, and SOS is going to end up being a much bigger classic in the long run.

She would have only been my #1 choice for Folklore, Fearless/1989 were deserved but not my #1 choice, and the only one she didn't deserve outright was Midnights

But she deserved for Red and Evermore so I'll begrudgingly take it

She absolutely deserved for Fearless, which was both the most acclaimed and most successful album of the lineup and for folklore, which was not only the greatest artistic triumph of the biggest star of the century but also the definitive album of the quarantine era from the moment it was announced.

The 2016 AOTY lineup was quite possibly the strongest lineup in Grammy history. I can't think of another year where every AOTY nominee won its genre category. It was really a showdown of the year's best. 1989 is not really the best material nominated, but it was exactly the sort of thing the Academy loves to honor for a lot of different reasons: they love an album with multiple smashes, they love a successful genre shift, they love to award someone who "defined" the year in headlines, they love a huge tour, they love a bunch of weeks at #1, they love a singer-songwriter, they love the historic narrative of a woman finally winning twice. It was too big to fail to win. That doesn't make it better than the albums that it beat, nor does it mean it was overrated or undeserving of the honor. Most people, at least, agree that 1989 is a great pop album on its own merit.

Midnights won for many of the same reasons as 1989, but it was not as widely beloved and she acted a mess that whole ceremony and it came so soon after her winning for her most revered record so its win looks worse. She didn't win for doing something new and exciting or for outdoing herself in quality material, so everybody knows she won this one just for being so untouchably successful. Even though it's lowkey my favorite of her pop albums, I was rooting for SZA to take it.
