@Ace Reject i know we've kinda talked about this a bit in the past without anything coming of it, but it's kinda time to actually do something for Dolly. A full discography rate is impossible given the overwhelming abundance of material and a singles rate wouldn't fully capture the range and greatness of her catalog, so my proposal would be a rate of 150 songs selected from across her albums, a mix of singles and deep cuts. Where it gets sticky is… Do we focus solely on her individual material, or do we include the Trio and Porter Wagoner stuff too? Maybe just 10-15 songs total from the collab work? I wouldn't be ready to launch it just yet; even as a stan, there are still what feels like dozens of albums I haven't heard yet (and that's without accounting for thirteen ******* Porter Wagoner collab albums) and I really do want to listen to them all to make sure nothing gets overlooked in compiling a song list for a rate. But I'd like to do it sometime in the coming months.

Oh, I'll try to do this. WYP? is one of the few great pop records of the decade. Can't say I cared much for the two after it, though. Will be my first time checking out the first three! I will also be looking up this The Way We Were cover that we're apparently not rating.

I was first introduced to Dolly as a kid through the combo of "When I Get Where I'm Going" and her Hannah Montana cameos. Sometime during my college years, I bought one of her greatest hits compilations and started following her new releases beginning with Blue Smoke. Every now and then, for whatever reason, a few new catalog songs would find their way into my library; I have no recollection of how I discovered a deep cut like "Robert" in 2016, but it's been a favorite ever since. While I started getting more into her catalog when I switched over to streaming at the end of the 2010s, it wasn't until 2024 that I began my proper deep dive into her albums; if the list I kept at the time is correct, I had heard 19 of her 46 non-holiday studio albums by the end of that year. It was a very rewarding experience; every album I played had at least a few songs I fell utterly in love with. And there weren't really any true duds (I'm never touching the post-9/11 "god and country" mess or her children's album). The vastness of her discography means that there will be more songs to discover for a long time to come. I've checked out six more albums for the first time this week and I just keep liking more and more songs. Her pen was kinda unmatched in both quantity and quality. Nobody writes quite like her—the humor and heart; the abundance of class consciousness and soft feminism; the empowerment and spirituality; the way she wrote with so much nostalgia for her home and upbringing, but never shied away from the harsher truths about those things; the unexpected turns of some of her storytelling (she has multiple songs where the narrator commits suicide! multiple songs from the perspective of sex workers! multiple songs about swingers! a song about orphans committing arson and murder!). And despite being such a fantastic and prolific songwriter, she never hesitated to record great material by other writers; Donna Summer became the first black woman to write a country #1 hit because of her and she recorded the song whose royalties probably paid for Kesha's musical education—and those were just the singles from one album! Then there's the Rockstar of it all… Another thing I've noticed is that she has a fair number of songs that seem to reuse or interpolate her own melodies from other songs—which does not have to be credited because she's the sole writer on the material, and which rarely seems to be commented on? But like… listen to "A Cowboy's Ways" and "Try." Several such cases. Also love her tendency to rerecord her own catalog songs if she felt they suited a new project; love how 1970's "My Blue Tears" got a bluegrass treatment in 2001 and a rock remake in 2024 and works any which way. Can't even start to list my favorite songs, my "liked songs" folder is well past a hundred entries and I've only heard like… half of her discography, really. If she hadn't been there, where would we be?

I'm kinda thinking SOS? I guess Showgirl was arguably unavoidable, but that's only really true of the era as a whole for a week or two around the album's release; outside of that it was just radio airplay and relationship discourse that had little to do with the album/era. Disagree with Doja Cat. I have never even heard a song by her so she wasn't unavoidable.
