Gaga described Mayhem in interviews as "soft". But you can't do soft grunge and rock, and make it work. Songs like Perfect Celebrity, Can't Stop the High and Killah need to be much heavier. The problem is, she wanted to make it an overall pop album, and soften it with added compression. Disease got me really excited, because it was so heavy with Evenescene vibes, and I thought that would be the direction of the era. Then the album came, and it was just watered down with all the dynamics sucked out of it. I blame DWAS

Okay I'm confused enough that I had to actually Google the definition of compression:

Compression in music production is an audio signal processing tool that controls dynamic range, reducing the volume difference between the loudest and quietest parts of a signal

What you're describing is stylistic choice and not directly related to the technical side of production ...? I think you're misusing the term
