I agree that Disease is a perfect balance. In all the rest, her voice and the music is pressed thin and squeezed flat with the music. There are a few scenarios to why this could be.

The first one being, when DWAS smashed and she decided to include it on the album, they reworked the mastering on the rest of the songs in attempt to make it more cohesive overall, giving it a 'softer' sound. If that's the case, it was done very quickly without care to the songs that would thrive with higher dynamics like PC, Abra, VIY, GOE and Killah, which are left with a muddy, unclean sound. In VIY especially, you can hear her vocals jittering.

Another scenario could be that Gaga's label just didn't have the budget to invest in a massively produced album, and only invested it in the lead single, which is why Disease sounds like it was mixed and mastered completely differently to the rest. I believe the quality of the production works hand in hand with how much the label/artist is willing to fund it, and it's quite telling that a lot of Gaga's output is low budget with the visuals for the album, the cover, the Disease music video and her cheap tour microphone. If that was the case, it's odd that they went with Disease when Abracadabra is by far the most commercial hit that would have benefit from that more.

And lastly, we all know Gaga likes to overwork in the production process. Since ARTPOP, she got in a habit of reworking the original demos multiple times, adding things, removing things and changing styles. As each album has passed, she has spent more years working on it and playing around in the studio learning different methods. It definitely feels like she tries to please the establishment more now by playing it safe, and delivering something safe for radio. Whereas her best albums TFM, BTW and ASIB were created very authentically and delivered promptly how they were intended as an art form, rather than being the rehashed result of a dreary process. Her view of pop music is different than standard, and she mocks it in a way through her music. Maybe the cheap and trashy sounds is her view of what she does, and she is being ironic. Harlequin was her way of showing what she is capable of vocally, and Mayhem was her playing the role of the pop star. She just needs to bring that richness into her studio albums to make them more impactful

The ERA has been a gem and an honor to witness as a LM. High quality production and performances, real expensive pop star type ****. Hope she really snags a performance at the Grammys. We have not seen her expensive pop star production performance there since 2011 (BTW).

2015 was Jazz, 2016 was David bowie tribute, 2017 was Metallica (Mic mute into the flame) and 2018 was Million piano reasons, 2019 was Shallow (lets just not about that performance☠️), 2022 was again Jazz with Tony tribute and 2024 was California dreaming with Bruno.
